Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A drive arrangement for a vehicle wheel includes an axially movable half axle provided with a positive clutch which in one end position engages the wheel hub for direct drive and in the other end position engages one element of an epicyclic gear unit driving the wheel at reduced speed. As shown, the end of the half axle 3 is formed with a toothed portion 9 which, in the left-hand (upper) position, engages teeth 10 on the hub 6 and in the right-hand (lower) position engages teeth 11 on the ring gear element 12 of the epicyclic unit, whose planet pins 14 drive the hub. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the clutch member is in two portions, one with external teeth (9<SP>1</SP>) engageable directly with the hub and the other with internal teeth (9<SP>11</SP>) engageable with the sun pinion (16<SP>1</SP>) of the gear unit.
