Abstract

862,708. Motor vehicles. RIBBLESDALE MOTORS Ltd. May 16, 1958 [Feb. 16, 1957], No. 5348/57. Class 79(2). A drive mechanism for the front hubs of a four wheel drive vehicle includes a disconnectible drive between the driven front wheel half shafts and the front hubs of the vehicle. A dog clutch element 4 having peripheral teeth 13 is caused to slide upon splines 6 on each driven front half shaft 3 by a selector fork 7 which is actuated by a bolt 9 exposed on the external face of the front hub 11 and operable by a suitable key. A cooperating dog clutch element is affixed to the hub 11. In a modification, Fig. 3, a dog clutch element 4 is mounted upon a sleeve 16 slidable upon the spliines of the half shaft and provided with a "quick" thread 17. A spring loaded ball 18 co-operates with the quick thread. The hub is provided with teeth 14 which may be engaged by the dog clutch teeth 13. On rotation of the half shaft in one direction or the other the dog clutch element 4 moves in response to the action of the quick thread and the co-operating teeth 13, 14 engage,
