Abstract
1,150,562. Differential gears. F. D. KNOBLOCK. 30 June, 1966 [1 July, 1965; 19 April, 1966], No. 29327/66. Heading F2D. A differential comprises spring-loaded members 30, 31 splined to half-shafts 23, 24 and normally coupled by bevelled clutch teeth 28 to similar teeth 27 on opposite sides of a central drive member 26 coupled to the crown wheel 22, the member 26 housing an inner control member 36 and side balk rings 38. The control member 36 has oppositely disposed teeth 37 with inclined sides, while each of the side rings 38 has radial projections (39) engaging locking grooves 40 in the drive member and outwardly projecting balk teeth 43. In operation, if shaft 24 and member 31 overrun the driving member 26 the inclined teeth 37 on the latter engage teeth 28 to force member 31 out of driving engagement against its loading spring, and at the same time the associated side ring 38 is rotated against a stop key 42, in which position the balk teeth 43 prevent engagement of teeth 27, 28. When the shaft speeds become equal ring 38 returns to its normal position to allow re-engagement of members 26, 31.
