Abstract

733,742. Overload-release clutches. CAMPBELL & ISHERWOOD, Ltd., and MEREDITH, J. June 30, 1953, No. 18062/53. Class 80 (2). A toothed clutch 17a, between a driving member 16 and an axially-movable member 21 connected through helical splines to a member 19 secured on a driven shaft 23, is normally held engaged by balls 24 housed in radial openings in the hollow shaft 23 and held engaged in a chamfered groove 25 in the hub 22 of member 21 by a central ball 26 loaded by an adjustable spring 17. On overload, member 21 moves axially, due to the helical splines, pushing the balls 24 inwards with a snap action, and the clutch then remains disengaged until re-set. To effect this, a locking member 31 is depressed into engagement with helical teeth 29 on member 21 so as to hold the latter against rotation, and the shaft 23 is turned manually. As shown, member 16 is driven by an electric motor 10 through reducing gearing. The clutch teeth 17a may be helical. Specification 636,404 is referred to.
