Abstract

[Also in Group XXII] In an inclined tooth or ball-and-recess clutch 20 between input and output members 10, 52 of a screw-thread cutting device, which is permanently disengaged on overload by toothinitiated axial movement of one clutch element 24 in opposition to an engaging spring 26, the clutch element 24 is maintained disengaged by balls 88 which, on overload-induced relative rotation between the clutch element 24 and an axially fixed sleeve 40 ball-keyed at 58 to the output member 52 and caging the balls 88, ride out of recesses 94 in the clutch element 24 into recesses 93 therein, to maintain the axial disengaged position of the clutch element 24. The recesses 93 may, as shown, be inclined to cause the balls 88 to move the clutch element 24 axially out of contact with the teeth 20 of the input member 10. Relative rotation between the element 24 and sleeve 40 after initial clutch disengagement is produced, as shown, by a spring-pressed drag pin 104 in the clutch element 24 which frictionally engages a drum 16 fast with the input shaft 10, or in Fig. 5 (not shown), by wedge members in recesses between the spring 26 and clutch element 24 which members frictionally engage the drum 16 under the action of the spring 26. The clutch is re-engaged by reverse rotation of the input shaft 10 whereupon an output member 52 is driven from the input shaft through the clutch 20, balls 88 and sleeve 40. In Fig. 6 (not shown), the overload release clutch is applied to a reversible screw-thread cutting device of the type described in Specification 748,091 and has a ball carried by the input member engaging arcuate recesses in the clutch element, which is pin-splined to the output member and is permanently disengaged by balls 88 housed in a freely rotatable member and which co-operate with grooves as above described in the clutch member.
