[Also in Group XXIV] A safe-torque clutch for a screw-thread tapping device or the like comprises a driving shell 12 having a degree of resilience and a tapered bore 15, a driven member 17 within the shell with a corresponding tapered-portion 18 and longitudinal cam-ridges 32, and a series of rollers 16 between the two members. The rollers are retained by a cage 30 which, at its lower end, has longitudinal grooves 37 cooperating with balls 36 which also engage in a circumferential groove 35 in the driven member 17. The driven member is located axially in the driving shell 12 by a bearing 21 and a screwed sleeve 23, and is adjusted thereby to vary the value of the safe-torque to be transmitted. A locking-sleeve 38 is provided to hold the parts in adjusted position. In operation, on rotation of the driving shell 12 in one direction, the rollers 16 are moved into wedging positions by a friction drag-ring 29 acting on the cage 30, and torque can be transmitted to the driven member 17. On the safe-torque being exceeded, the rollers 16 ride over the tops of the cam ridges 32 by deforming the shell 12 to break the drive. The rollers 16 are held in a drive-released position intermediate the camridges 32 by one of the balls 36 engaging a blind portion of the groove 35. Reversal of drive will re-couple the drive in the reverse direction until the safe-torque is exceeded in this direction. If over-riding does not occur in the reverse drive, the rollers 16 will be re-set ready for forward drive again, but if overriding does occur then a re-setting operation is necessary.
