Abstract

809,518. Drilling; tapping. SCULLYJONES & CO. Aug. 20, 1956, No. 25426/56. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIV] A safe-torque clutch for screw-thread tapping or drilling comprises a driving-shell 10 having a degree of resilience with a conical-bore 12, a driven member 16 with a conical-end 17 spaced from the bore 12, and sets of rollers 13, 34 arranged between the two members. The rollers 34 are maintained in fixed positions relative to the driven part 17 by a cage 32, whilst the rollers 13 are held by a free-cage 29 which is acted upon by a spring- pressed drag-ring 28 so that when the drive is in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 3, the rollers 13 are moved into the wedge-driving position shown to transmit a torque from the driving to the driven member. At a predetermined safe-torque the rollers 13 will ride over the tops of the rollers 34 by deforming the shell 10 to break the drive. The rollers 13 are held in a drive-released position, intermediate the rollers 34, by balls 39 in longitudinal grooves 40 in the outer cage 29 co-operating with a control groove 38 in the inner cage 32. Reversal of the drive will drive the driven-member reversely unless the safe-torque is exceeded. If overriding does not occur in the reverse drive, the rollers 13 will be re-set ready for the forwarddrive, but if over-riding does occur then a resetting operation is necessary, which may be done manually. The driven-member is maintained in axial-relation to the driving-shell 10 by a screwed-sleeve 23, ball-bearing 21 and a locking sleeve 41. The screwed sleeve 23 can adjust the relative axial position of the shell 10 and driven-cone 17 to vary the safe-torque to be transmitted.
