Abstract

809,520. Drilling; screwing-up nuts &c. SCULLY-JONES & CO. Aug. 20, 1956, No. 25429/56. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIV] A safe-torque clutch for driving drills or taps, of for setting nuts and studs, comprises a driving shell 15 having a degree of resilience and a cylindrical bore, a driven member 18 with two oppositely-disposed cam flats 27, 28, adjacent flats 31, 32, and connecting eccentric surfaces 33, 34, and a pair of diametricallyopposite rollers 29, 30 between the members retained by a cage 37. For forward-driving in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 7, the rollers 29, 30 assume the wedge-driving positions shown, and torque is transmitted to the driven member 18. On the safe torque being exceeded the rollers ride over the high-spots of the camflats 27, 28 with deformation of the shell 15, and down the surfaces 33, 34 to release the drive. The rollers are retained in non-driving positions by the cage 37, which has a limited rotation relative to the driven member 18, provided by a lug 41 thereon engaging in a part-circular recess in the end of the cage. On reversal of the drive, the rollers 29, 30 roll up the surfaces 33, 34 to their original positions on the flats 27, 28. The value of the safe torque to be transmitted can be adjusted by reducing the effective length or diameter of the rollers. In a modification the outer surface of the shell 15 is conical and a mating conical sleeve is screwed over it with an adjustable clearance, or with any desired degree of pressure so that the resistance to deformation, and hence the transmissable-torque, may be varied.
