Abstract

893,932. Slip couplings. BAKER, A. A., and RHOADES, H. L. Jan. 29, 1959, No. 3264/59. Class 80 (2). A hand wheel 61 is coupled to its mounting 119, which is adapted to be secured to the shaft of a valve controlling a wall hydrant, by balls 63 carried in a transverse bore in the mounting and biased radially outwards by springs 64 to engage recesses 62 in the hand wheel, these recesses having radial surfaces 70 at one side so that in the clockwise direction the hand wheel is positively coupled to the mounting, and inclined cam surfaces 71 on the other so that in the anti-clockwise direction the balls are cammed out of the recesses on overload, as when the closure of the valve is completed. The hand wheel 61 then turns relatively to the mounting 119. A screw 73 threaded into a tapped bore in the mounting 119 has a tapered end engaging plungers 165 abutting the springs 65, turning the screw sliding the plungers radially to adjust the compression of the springs and accordingly adjust the torque which can be transmitted in the anti-clockwise direction to the mounting before the balls 63 are cammed inwards to their inoperative positions.
