Abstract

856,136. Wrenches. M.H.H. ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. March 25, 1957 [March 26, 1956], No. 9381/56. Class 61. An adjustable torque limiting wrench comprises an outer casing C, a cylindrical housing 2 rotatably mounted within the casing and having an adaptor head A and a driving ball clutch consisting of a ball 14 urged by a spring 12 into direct engagement with a series of clutch balls 15 carried in radial slots 16 in the housing and resiliently urged by the ball 14 into driving engagement with cam grooves on the inside of a collar fast with the casing C. When torque below a predetermined value is applied the balls 15 remain partly in the slots 16 and partly in the cam grooves 21, but when the torque exceeds that value the balls move out of the cam grooves and into the slots. The grooves 21 having a steep angle on the driving side and a gradual slope on the other side to give a ratchet effect. The load on the spring 12 is adjustable by the screw plug 17. The collar 5 has a flange 6 by which it is secured to the casing by a screw cap 7. In a modification the casing is fitted with a.lining sleeve, the collar being a press fit on the end of the sleeve. In place of sockets for a tommy bar, serrations to give a good grip are formed on the casing. Specification 674,352 is referred to.
