Abstract

638,055. Screwdrivers. HITCHING, T. G. BROOKE-. June 22, 1948, No. 16791. [Classes 61 (i) and 61 (iii)] A screwdriver handle normally freely rotatable upon the screwdriver shaft is slidable upon the shaft against a spring to a position in which it is in clutch-like engagement with a finger-piece rigidly secured to the shaft. The handle 1 is bored to freely receive both the shaft 5 and an enlarged end portion thereof 8, which is urged against a shoulder 12 within the bore by a spring 11 retained in the bore by a screwed plug 10. The forward face of the handle 1 is provided with a plurality of projections 13 which are adapted, upon compression of the spring 11 by an axial force applied to the handle to engage within corresponding recesses 19 formed in the end of the finger-piece 14, which is rigidly moulded upon the shaft, whereby the handle is brought into driving relationship with the shaft. The handle 1, screwed plug 10 and finger-piece 14 may be of moulded synthetic resinous material. According to the Provisional Specification the finger-piece may be secured by a rivet passing through the finger-piece and shaft.
