A screwdriver having a blade 2 which is carried by the shank 1 has a sleeve 7 of circular crosssection detachably or non- detachably fixed to the shank so that the lower part of the sleeve forms a rigid skirt 25 which surrounds the blade 2 and the head of a screw when the blade is engaged in the slot in the screw and a leaf spring 11 carried by the skirt or adapted to be carried by the screwdriver so as to act on the side wall of a screw encircled by the skirt through a slot 16 in the wall of the skirt. In a modification the blade end of the stem is in the form of a detachable bit to which the sleeve 7 is secured.
