Patented Jan. 9, 1951 v UNITED STAT ES mmsf o .j, :3 .1: HELVE SETTINGFOR. rRosrEc'roRs' rooL's Christopher L. Swett, Winnemucca, Nev.
Application November 26, 194 6 Serial No. 'l'1'2,2 r
eclaims'f (-01. 145-29) to provide a tool of this character having a hollow handle in which tools that are attached to the head are kept.
A further feature is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eflicient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side:elevational view of the invention with the pick tool attached thereto,
Figure 2 is an end view thereof,
Figure 3 is a top plan view,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 in Figure 4,
Figure 6 is side elevational view of the chipping tool,
Figure '7 is a front view thereof,
Figure 8 is a side elevational view of the pick tool,
Figure 9 is a front view thereof.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein, for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 represents a circular hollow handle preferably constructed Of metal and having a decreased circular front end 6. The end 6 has near, its outer end a circumferential flange T which. prevents a head 8 placed thereon from slipping forward, said head having a non-circular opening 9 for placing over the non-circular end 6a of handle 5. The end 6a is also formed with atransverse groove Ill. The upper end H of the head is rectangular in shape and has a fiat striking end l2 so that the tool can be used as p In the lower end of the head and extending upwardly into the head is a circular recess l3 for interchangeably receiving the re-' duced upper circular end I 4 of apick tool IE or a chipping bit It. A transverse groove Ma is formed at one side of reduced end l4. Circular threaded openings l1 and I8 extend transversely through the walls of openings 9 and l3 respectively so that a screw l 9 placed in opening 11 and groove ID will hold the head 8 on the handle and a screw 20 placed in the opening l8 and groove Ma will hold the end [4 of a pick tool 15 or chipping tool [6 in the opening l3 in the head as shown in Figure 1. The outer ends of screws 19 and 2|) are formed with Allen wrench sockets [9a and 20a.
The rear end of the handle is internally threaded at 22 to hold the threaded end 23 of a cap 24 placed therein. Said cap 24 has an outwardly extending metal loop 25 for attaching thereto a leather carrying thong (not shown).
A conventional Allen wrench 26 is pivotally connected to the inner portion of cap 24 by a pin 2! that extends inwardly from the side of the cap, said cap having a recess 28 wherein the wrench can be recessed when other tools are placed in the handle.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described. and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A prospectors tool comprising a handle open at one end and having a reduced non-circular opposite end, an elongated head having an opening extending throughout its width and shaped to receive the reduced end of the handle. a fastener, carried by the head having a portion extendinginto the opening formed in the head, an elongated, recess provided in the outer periphery of the reduced end of the handle, said recess being disposed perpendicular to the longitudinal axis ofthe handle and receiving the portion of the fastener that extends into the opening provided, in the head, and a stop member rigidly carriedbythe reduced end of the handle for gauging, the positioning of the recess in communication with the fastener and for limiting the sliding moyenient of the head on the reduced end of thehandle? 2. A prospectors tool comprising a handle having an internally threaded recess at one end and a reduced non-circular opposite end, a removable head having an opening shaped to receive the reduced end of the handle, a fastener carried by 5 the head having a portion extending into the opening formed in the head, an elongated recess provided in the outer periphery Of the reduced end of the handle for engaging the portion of the fastener that extends, into the; opening provided in the head; said recess being disposed perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the handle and means threaded in the internally threaded recess and having a headednmttiontdfacilitate removal of the fastener from the head.
