Description

July 21; 1953 PRAY 2,645,960
BOLT HOLDING TOOL Filed Nov. 27. 1950 Inventor Earl I? Pray W W MW Patented July 21, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BOLT HOLDING TOOL Earl P. Pray, Goring, Nebr. Application November 27, 1950, Serial No. 197,681
1 Claim. (o1.'s1 13) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in bolt holding tools adapted for holding the head of a carriage bolt from turning while the nut is being turned to remove the same.
An important object of the invention is to improve a plier type tool having a' pair of coacting jaws and constructing the jaws to project at right angles to the handles of the tool and formed with tapered ends and opposed cutting edges whereby the jaws may be driven into the wood in which the bolt is fastened and at diametrically opposite sides of the head of the bolt to firmly grip the bolt in order that the nut may be removed therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to construct the jaws with flat upper surfaces to receive a hammer blow for driving the jaws into the wood.
A still further object is to provide a tool of this character of simple and practical construction which is efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view;
Figure 2 is an enlarged front elevational view; and,
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention the numerals 5 and 6 designate a pair of handles which are pivotally connected to each other adjacent their front ends in crossed relation by a bolt and nut I.
The front ends of the handles are formed with a pair of jaws 8 and 9 of substantially knife blade construction which project at right angles to the handles in a downward direction. The lower ends of the jaws are, tapered to a point I0 with the rear edge of the jaws curved as shown at H and the front edges I 2 of the jaws are positioned parallel to each other-in opposed relation and are sharpened to a cutting edge.
The upper surface of the front ends of the handles and at the backs of the jaws 8 and 9 are flattened as shown at 13 and H to provide a flat impact surface.
In the operation of the tool the pointed lower ends [0 of the jaws are driven into a wooden member [5 in which the head l6 of a bolt [1 has become recessed or embedded, the jaws 8 and 9gbeing positioned at diametrically opposite sides of the head l6 and a hammer blow struck grip the same.
The bolt may thus be held while a wrench 18 is applied to the nut l9 on the bolt to free the nut and remove the bolt.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanyin drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
Abolt holding tool comprising a pairof handles pivoted to each other in crossed relation; jaws projecting at right anglesto and at the front terminal portions of the handles, the jaws having opposed, coacting parallel edges of knife blade construction extending at right angles to said handles and having surfaces which curve downwardly to meet the parallel cutting edges in I a sharpened point.
EARL P. PRAY.
