Specification of Letters Patent.
.Patented June 9, 19141 Application filed August l2, 1913. Serial No. 784,385.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Jenn K. CHAMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Faris, in the county `of Bourbon and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inBolt-I'Iead Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in bolt head holders and has particular rcfcrence to that type which are designed for holding a round head bolt to prevent its turning during the operation of removing the nut therefrom.
An important object of my invention is toy provide a device of the above mentioned character which employs a plurality of coacting teeth in connectie-n and formed integra-l with the jaws of pliers or a wrench.
A further important` object of my invention is to provideia device of the above mentioned character which is constructed of few parts reliable in its operation and cheap to manufacture.
The above and additional Objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification, and then more particularly pointed out inthe claim which is appended hereto and forms a part of this application,
With reference to the drawings wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the severalviews of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device as used in connection with pliers, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, illustrating the teeth forming a part of my invention, Fig. 3 is aplan view of my device illustrating it in connection with a wrench, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing` forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate correspending parts, the numerals 1 and 2 designate the handles of the pair of pliers, each provided with jaws 3 and et respectively as will be clearly seen with reference to Fig. 1. Each of the jaws Band l is provided upon one of its side faces with a plurality of substantially V-shaped teeth 5. 'lhc teeth 5 are fixed integral with the jaws in spaced relationship and the pointed ends thereof extend beyond the edges of the jaw faces to provide for gripping engagement with the head of the bolt not shown. The jaws 3 and Ll are provided with arcuately recessed and corrugated surfaces (i which assist the teeth 5 in gripping the bolt by gripping the head of the bolt while the teeth 5 are arranged to grip the bolt shank, thus securely holding the bolt against rotation. An auxiliary lever or handle 7 is pivotally mounted as indicated at S to the handle 1, to provide for the closing of the jaws 3 and i when the jaws are to engage a bolt of such size as would ordinarily cause the handles 1 and 2 to move apart such a distance as would prevent the operator from grasping the two handles with one hand. The pointed ends of the teeth 5 are corrugated as indicated at 9 to provide the positive gripping engagement of the teeth with the bolt head.
It is apparent that my device will positively hold the bolt head to provide the desired action in a manner which has been previously described, and that various uses of my device may be had in shop work for unscrewing nuts, holding pins of various types and other obvious uses.
Vith reference to Figs. 3 and t in which is illustrated a modified form of my invention, the ` numerals 10 and 11 designate a fixed and sliding jaw respectively of a wrench designated 12 as an entirety. jaws l0 and 11 are each provided with a plurality of teeth 1 3 formed integral with the jaws upon one of the side faces. The teeth 13 are constructed after the same manner as the teeth 5 in my preferred form, and the pointed edges thereof extend beyoud the jaw faces of each of the jaws. The jaws 10 and 11 are provided with arcuately recessed and corrugated gripping sur-` faces 14 adapted to receive the head of a bolt. The sliding jaw 11 is operated by means of a screw threaded adjusting bar` l5, and the manner of operating the jaws 10 and 11 to provide for their engagement with a bolt head is similar to that described in connection with my device as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4; is best adapted for heavy work as it is obvious that a better gripping en- The gagement of the jaws l0 and ll is facilitated by means of the construction illustrated in the above mentioned ligures.
In reduction to practice I have found that the form of my invention illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description as the preferred embodiment, is the most eflicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that Various minor changes in details oit' construction, proportion, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrilicing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what is claimed is:
Vformed intermediate of the faces of the jaws and adapted to receive a bolt head, and a plurality of integral spaced and approximately ii-shaped teeth formed upon one side `of each of said jaws and having their apeX edges disposed approximately flush With'the inner faces lof the jaws.
In testimony whereof I ailiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Y JOHN K.. CHAMP.
Witnesses W. M. ROGERS,` DENIS DRENDON.
