LEWIS PORTER MOORE, OF WELDON, ILLINOIS.
BOLT-HOLDING FINGERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 12, 1912.
Application filed July 20, 1911. Serial No. 639,520.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwrs PORTER MOORE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Weldon, in the county of Dewitt and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Bolt-Holding Pincers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple tool in the form of a pair of pincers, whereby the head of a bolt and its neck may be gripped and held, to prevent the bolt from turning while removing the nut from the other end of the bolt.
A further object is to provide gripping blocks which may be readily attached to a pair of pincers of ordinary construction, and thus provide means for holding the head of the bolt while removing the nut therefrom.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views, and in which- 1 Figure 1 shows the bolt-holding pincers and illustrates their mode of operation; and Fig. 2 shows one of the jaws of the pincers, looking at the gripping surfaces.
The device comprises a pair of levers or handles A, which are crossed at a and pivoted at a, and at their upper ends carry pincer jaws a having the usual beveled working ends 41 Upon the under surface of the pincer jaws a", there are attached blocks B formed of some suitable metal, and
of the shape shown in Fig. 1 of the draw- The forward edges of the blocks B are cut away or beveled, as shown at b on an incline opposed to the incline of the under side of the beveled working ends a of the jaws a and upon the bevel surface, they will be provided with notches or serrations 6 whereby to secure a firm grip upon the head of the bolt.
As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the bolt C, having the usual head a and the squared neck 0 will be gripped, with its head 0 within the recess formed between the working ends a and the gripping blocks B. While held thus, the nut 0 may be engaged by a wrench of any usual construction, and removed from the threaded end of the bolt.
By means of the device as shown and described, the head of the bolt will be gripped and held in a manner to prevent its turning, notwithstanding that it may require great strain to remove the nut 0 from the end of the bolt.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A bolt holding pincers comprising a pair of levers pivotally connected, having handles at one end and pincer jaws at the opposite end, comprising parallel engaging surfaces sharply beveled upon their under sides, gripping surfaces beneath the pincer jaws and extending at an angle to the beveled portions thereof in position to engage the head of a bolt when the pincer jaws are in engagement with the shank of a bolt.
2. A bolt holding pincers comprising a pair of levers pivotally connected, having handles at one end and pincer jaws at the other, removable blocks formed to fit the underside of the pincer jaws and having a beveled gripping surface extending at an angle to the under surface of the pincer jaws, and having vertical corrugations extending across the gripping surfaces.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEWIS PORTER MOORE.
