FRANCIS M. NOLDER, OF WESTBORO, OHIO.
WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANoIs M. Nononn, a citizen of the United States, residing at IVestboro, in the county of Clinton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tools and more particularly to wrenches of the alligator type. The leading feature of my invention is to provide a simple, efficient, and inexpensive alligator wrench so designed that the various parts are placed with the object in view of providing a wrench which will have all of its edges substantially flush with no part projecting in the way of the operators hand.
In the accompanying drawing there has been illustrated a satisfactory reduction of my improvement to practice, and in which drawing:
Figure 1 is a view of the wrench, and Fig. 2 is a. view illustrating the wrench applied to a pipe.
My improved wrench embodies what I will term a handle 1 which may be of any suitable design and construction.
It will be borne in mind that the type of alligator wrench which I have devised is best surely serviceable in a combination tool and for this reason it will be noted as the description is amplified, that although the jaws adapted to clamp a pipe or the like are spring pressed. The outline of the jaws and the other parts of the wrench is such as to conform to that of an ordinary handle having opposite longitudinal edges flush throughout their length; therefore the arrangement is such that when the various parts of the wrench are in normal closed po sition suitable hand hold is provided so that if another tool is formed upon the shank 2 said latter member will be a handle but when the wrench is to be used the handle 1 as provided will be called in direct requisition.
The shank of the handle 2 has its edges rounded so that the same can be conveniently grasped by the operator and I have provided the said handle with a spring pressed jaw 7 which is arranged at one of the sides thereof and which provides the end of the handle, the said jaw being shaped to conform with the shape of the handle and Specification of Letters Patent.

in reality forming a part of the handle. The j aw 7 has its inner face toothed, as at 8, and the jaw is provided with a reduced shank 9 which is received within an opening in the side of the handle, and is pivotally connected with the handle, as at 10. The shank is provided with a reduced angular extension forming a tongue 11, and the handle 2 is slotted for the reception of a spring 12 which has one of its ends secured to the said handle and its opposite end free and bearing against the tongue 11 to normally force the jaw closed. The side of the handle, opposite to that provided with the opening for the shank and tongue of the jaw has a rounded end 13, which corresponds with the inner rounded face of the jaw 7, and both the rounded and longitudinal portion of the reduced end of the handle is toothed, as at 14:. In applying the jaw to a pipe or the like, it is merely necessary to swing the jaw 7 upon its pivot 10, when the co-acting toothed portions 8 and 13 will effectively grip the article and permit of its ready rotation. I
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:
A pipe wrench comprising an elongated shank, a gripping jaw formed upon said shank, a removable jaw having an eccentric portion, a relatively reduced tongue formed integrally with and tangentially of said eccentric portion, said shank being formed inward of said first named jaw with a relatively deep socket, a spring receiving recess formed in the inner ends of said socket, a transverse pivot carried by said shank and extending across said socket, said eccentric portion being fulcrulned upon said pivot in such a way that said movable law may engage with said other jaw, and whereby said tongue may close the open end of said socket and beflush with the approximate edge of said shank, and an expansible spring secured in said recess and bearing against the outer end of said tongue to hold said jaws in contact.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
