WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 18,
Application filed October 1, 1921. Serial No. 50%,756.
To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANDREW HUGO Art DEREOIJ and JOE-IN HERMAN ANDERSON, both tarmers, subjects of the King of Great Br1tain. residing at Loverna, Saskatchewan,
lanada have invented certain new and useful improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is the specification.
{Fur invention relates to improvements in wrenches. and the object of the invention 15 to devise a wrench which is simple and cheap in construction which will dispense with the threaded spindle for adjusting the movable jaw and which may be easily and quickly operated to adjust the movable jaw to the required position, and it consists es sentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of our wrench.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken through the aws of the wrench.
Fig. 3 is a plan sectional view taken through the movable jaw of the wrench.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
1 indicates the handle of the wrench which comprises a rod, the ends 2 and 3 which are turned back upon themselves in narrow Ll iorm, the inner end or base of the ti being. also turned outward at 4 and 5 into a lip form to form a gripping handle. The ends of the arm extend in a parallel direction and are inserted in a stationary jaw 6 being suitably secured therein. 7 is the movable jaw of the wrench which is pro-, vided with orifices 8 and 9 through which the portions 2 and 3 of the handle slidably extend. 10 is a cross orifice extending through the movable jaw 7 and through the centre of which the handle portion 3 extends as it passes through the orifice 9. The V orifice 10 is provided at its outer side with a recess 11. It will be noted that the upper face of the orifice 10 is inclined at 12. 13 is. a washer through which the handle portion 3 extends, the washer 13 being provided with a tongue 14 extending into the recess 11. 15 is a spiral spring extending around the handie portion 3 between the base of the recess 10 and the lower face of the Washer 13. It will be noted that the side portions of the washer 13 at 16 and 17, are flattened off so that the washer does not project too far beyond the side faces of the movable jaw,
but yet sufliciently far to enable the thumb and finger of the operator to have a gripping contact with such washer when they are placed at each side of the movable jaw 7 and the orifice 10. In Fig. 2 of the drawing, the movable jaw is shown in the locked position, that is to say, that the washer 13 is set at an incline so that the diagonally opposite edge portions of the orifice contact with the opposite sides of the horizontal portion 3 thereby serving to grip it. The upper face 12 of the orifice 10 being in clined serves to hold the washer in this position when the pressure of the article insert ed between the jaws tends to force the jaws apart. The edged portions of the washer, therefore. have a biting grip upon the handle portion 3 preventing its movement, the washer also being held in this position by means of the spiral spring 15. When it is desired to release the movable jaw 7 all that it is necessary to do is to place the thumb and finger against each side face of the aw 7 and each side of the washer 13 so that the thumb and finger will grip such washer enabling the operator to draw it down towards a horizontal position against the pressure of the spring 15. When the Washer 13 is in the horizontal position it will be free of the handle portion 3 allowing the thumb and finger of the operator to move the jaw 7 to the required position. As soon as the thumb and finger of the operator are removed, the washer is released and is carried back to its gripping position by means of the spring 15.
What we claim as our invention is:
A wrench, comprising parallel handle portions, a stationary jaw connecting the handle portions together at one end, a movable jaw having orifices through which the handle portions extend and so formed as to bind upon the handle portions when gripping pressure is exerted by the jaws and having a cross orifice through which one of the handle portions extends having a recess at one side of the orifice, a, Washer fitting Within the recess and having zi-single orifice through which the handle portion extending through the cross orifice passes and by Which the other handle portion passes clear, a
tongue extending from the Washer into the recess of the cross orifice and a spring extending between the base of the recess and 10 the Washer.
