ARCHIBALD C. SUDDARTH, OF MONTEREY, VIRGINIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 25, 1911.
Patented Feb. 27, 1912.
Serial No. 662,314.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AROI-IIBALD C. SUD- DARTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monterey, in the county of Highland and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Wrench; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful wrench.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a wrench stock, the head of which is provided with a pair of deep cylindrical depressions adapted to receive the shanks of adjustable wrench jaws, the shanks having annular grooves into which threaded pins extend, to receive transversely arranged pins penetrating the head of the stock, thus swiveling the shanks in the depressions. The jaws are arranged eccentrically with relation to the shanks, so that when the aws are adjusted revolubly, they are adapted to fit various sizes of nuts.
The invention comprises further features and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the wrench, showing the jaws adjusted differently. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the jaws.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates a wrench stock which comprises a handle 2 and a head 3. The head 3 is provided with deep cylindrical depressions 4.
5 and 6 designate wrench jaws, which are tapered longitudinally, and rectangular in cross section. By constructing the jaws rectangular in cross section four sides are provided on each jaw. The jaws are provided with cylindrical shanks 7 which are arranged eccentrically with relation to the jaws, and are adapted to extend into the depressions. These shanks are provided with annular grooves 8, into which the pins 9 (which penetrate the head of the stock of the wrench) extend, thus swiveling the jaws to the head. By tightening or loosening the pins, which are threaded in the stock the jaws may be adjusted, and held adjusted, so as to fit nuts of various dimensions. The head of the stock is so shaped on its outer end face, as to dispose any two opposing sides of the jaws in parallel, so as to firmly and properly grip a nut.
From the foregoing it will be noted that, there has been produced a simple, novel and efficient wrench, and one which has been found practical.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is In combination, a wrench stock having a head provided with deep cylindrical depressions, revoluble jaws having ec'centrically arranged shanks provided with annular grooves fitted within the depression, pins threaded through the head and extended into the grooves of the shank, thereby rendering the jaws swivelly adjustable, the pins constituting means to hold the jaws adjusted, the jaws being rectangular in cross section and tapering longitudinally, thereby forming the jaws with a plurality of nut engaging faces, the jaws being revolubly adjustable, so as to dispose any two faces of the jaws in opposition so as to engage a nut.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARCHIBALD C. SUDDARTI-I.
