To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. MA'r'rnsoN, a'citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and the object is to provide a wrench comprising a handle having a jaw fixed thereon, in combination with a jaw movable on the handle and provided with manipulative means for adjusting and holding the same in different positions relative to the fixed jaw, the two jaws being constructed with polygonal sides so that they may be engaged within the polygonal opening of a valve plug or the like and adjusted so as to eii'ect firm engagement therewith so that the wrench may be operated to release or adjust the plug or the elements with which it is engaged.
In the particular embodiment shown the two jaws of the wrench when brought together form a hexagonal head in which the combined width of adjacent side edges of jaws form one of the sides of the hexagonal head of equal width with each of the other sides of the hexagonal head. The adjacent surfaces of the two jaws are fiat planes so that they may be engaged against the exterior walls of a nut or the like in the usual manner of wrenches, thus providing a wrench having the combined function of a nut wrench and a wrench for engagement within polygonal openings for the purpose previously mentioned.

The wrench includes a metal bar 1 of substantial shape and construction having a manually engageable handle 2 in connection with one end thereof. A jaw 3 is rigid with the opposite end of the bar 1 and in formed by meeting of the side edges 5 is in the same plane with the axis of the bar 1, so that the innerwall 60f the jaw 3 is at right angles to the axis of "the bar 1. Preferably the back of the jaw 3 is formed with a head 7 which extends below the bar 1 and which'is adapted to be used as a hammer, or otherwise as desired;
The 1 movable jaw 8 has an opening through which the bar 1 extends and is provided with an extended portion 9 formed in integral connection with a sleeve 10 embracing the bar 1 and cooperating with the remainder of the jaw 8 to hold or retain the latter in proper position upon the bar 1. The jaw 8 is also in the form of one half of a hexagon and when the inner wall 11 thereof is in contact with the inner wall 6 of the fixed jaw 3, the two jaws constitute or form. an equilateral hexagon in which the side edges 12 of the jaw 8 are in alinement with the side edges 4 of the jaw 3. Thus the combined width of one of the side edges 4 of the fixed jaw and the adjacent side edge 12 of the movable jaw is equal to the width of either of the side edges 5 of the fixed jaw, or either of the side edges 13 of the movable jaw.
It will be observed that the inner wall 11 of the movable jaw is parallel with the wall 6 of the fixed jaw and therefore is adapted to cooperate with the fixed jaw to serve as a wrench for operation of a nut or the like. It will also be observed that by moving the movable jaw away from the fixed jaw the wrench may be enlarged so as to engage firmly within the polygonal opening in which it is placed.
The movable jaw 8 and the extension 9 thereof contain a threaded hole 14 within which the screw 15 is operatively engaged. The screw 15 is provided with a serrated wheel 16 having an axial projection 17 extending into a recess or bearing in an adjacent abutment 18 fixed to the bar 1 and arranged to prevent axial movement of the screw 15 toward the handle. The wheel 16 extends into a notch 19 in the bar 1 and said notch is of such depth that the walls thereof serve as abutments limiting axial movement of the wheel and thus enabling the screw to retain the jaw 8 rigidly in proper adjustment when engaged within a polygonal opening.
The back portion 20 of the movable is preferably in the same plane with the back or head 7 of the fixed jaw so that said two back portions may also constitute a polygonal head for engagement in smaller openings than will receive the jaws 3 and 8.
A wrench of this construction is especially adapted for use in adjusting and removing valve plugs from the engines of automobiles, and it is also adapted for a variety of other nses, to which the wrenches of usual construction are not applicable.
