UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. KELLEY, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO CHARLES H. HAGER-MAN, 0F SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
WRENCH.
Application filed April 15, 1922. Serial No. 552,947.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. KELLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements 111 wrenches, and more particularly to improvements in wrenches of the movable jaw type.
Andmportant object of the invention is to provide a wrench having a jaw which is shiftable for coaction'with either of two fixed aws, the coaction with one jaw being such as to permit its use in engaging poly onal surfaces, as for example, the facets of a nut, and the coaction with the other aw being such as to permit its engagement with circular devices such as pipe, round iron, and the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the adjustment of the movable jaw is materially simplified and the construction of the wrench materially cheapened.
A further object of the invention is to pro' vide a wrench having a fixed and a movable jaw one of the jaws being provided with angularly disposed jaw faces arranged in an included angle and the other of the jaws having similarly angled aw faces arranged in an exterior angle, and a connection between the fixed and movable jaws permit ting the arrangement of the movable jaw so that one of its jaw faces will parallel a jaw face of the fixed jaw or so that the other of the faces of the movable jaw will be arranged at an acute angle to the other of the jaw faces of the fixed jaw, the last named coacting faces of the fixed and movable jaws being provided with teeth whereby to provide an alligator wrench.
These and other objects I accomplish by the construction and arrangement shown in the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters designate like parts, and in which: i
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention showing the movable jaw in position to form an alligator wrench; I
Figure 2 is a sectional view showing the movable jaw in position. to form a nut wrench; Figure 3 is a section Figure 2; and
Figure 4.- is a perspective of the removable jaw detachec.
Broadly stated, the invention consists in a fixed jaw 10 having angularly disposed jaw faces 11 and 12 and a complementary movable jaw 13 having angularly disposed jaw faces 14 and 15wl1ich are arranged at substantially the sameangle as the jaw faces of the fixed jaw. The jaw faces of one of the jaws, at present disclosed as the fixed jaw 10, are arranged in an included angle and the jaw faces of the other jaw are arranged in an exterior angle, and a connec tion is provided between the fixed jaw 10 on the line of jaw may be arranged to bring its jaw face 14: into substantial parallelism with the jaw face 11 of the fixed jaw 10, or to arrange the jaw face 15 of the movable jaw at an acute angle to the jaw face 12 of the fixed jaw. The coacting jaw faces 12 and 15 are provided with teeth whereby these jaws when arranged at an acute angle, as hereinbefore stated, may be employed as an alligator and the movable jaw 13 so that the movable wrench for engaging circular surfaces such as pipe, round metal, etc.
In the present illustration the connection between the head and movable jaws is. provided by forming in the head a recess or slot 16 opening into the jaws'll and12.
The walls of the slot are provided with slots 18 communicating with the slot 16 and substantially paralleling the jaw 12. The movable jaw 13 is formed with a leg 19 which is slidably mounted in the slot 16 of the fixed This leg has extending therethrough adjacent its lower end a pin 20, the ends of which operate within the slots 18 and one end of which is provided with a fixed head 21 abutting the outer face of one side of the head of the wrench. The opposite end is adapted for the attachment of a removable head 21 which abuts. the opposite face of the wrench head to prevent removal of the pin.
The recess 16 opens through one side jaw 12 to provide an alligator wrench for engagement with objects circular in cross section. When the cam face 26 is engaged with the spring the movable head has the teeth of the jaw '15 thrown into engagement with the teeth of the jaw 12 so that the movable head is held against movement after adjustment. When it is desired to regulate'the distance between the faces 11 and 12; this may beaccomplish'ed by engaging the removable head with the hand and ele-i likewise provided with angular jaw faces vating the same against the action of the spring so that theteeth of the jaws 15 and 12' clearrone another, and shifting themovable aw.
From the foregoing it is believed to be obvious that a wrench constructed in accordance withmyinvention is particularly we'll adapted forthe purpose for which itis intended by reason of the fact that the same may be readily adjusted to take different sizes of nuts or readily shifted to a position where it maybe engaged with and employed for turning members circular in cross section; It will furthermore be obvious that the construction as hereinbefore set forth is capable of some change and modification without materially departing from the spirit of my invention and I accordingly do not limit myself thereto except as here inafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A wrench embodying a head having a cutout portion forming angularly disposed jaw faces, and a shiftable and tiltable jaw adapted to coact with adjacent jaw faces of the head for the reception of material to be held, the coaction of one pair of said faces forming an alligator wrench and the coaction of the other pair of said faces forming a wrench for engaging polygonal surfaces, the faces of the first named pair bearing gripping teeth coacting during the coaction of thelast namedpair of faces to hold the jaw against shifting. in one direction;
2, A wrench embodying a head having a cutout portion forming angularly disposed jaw faces, a 'shiftablejaw provided with angular jaw faces adapted to coact with adjacentjaw faces of the head, and a connection between the head and said shiftable jaw permitting shifting of the shiftablej aw to engage one of the jaw faces of said head or to be arranged at an angle thereto, said shiftable jaw when engaged with the jaw of said head having a jaw face substantially paralleling the other jaw face of the head, said shiftable jaw when arranged at an angle to the jaw of said head combining therewith to form an alligator wrench, said connection between the head and movable jaw maintaining the movable jaw in adjusted position.
3. A wrench comprising a head having a transverse slot therein, angularly disposed jaw faces formed in the head, one of which parallels said slot, a slot connecting the last named jaw face and the transverse slot-of the head, a movable jaw having a leg extending through the last namedslot and provided with an angular portion operating and rotatable in the first named slot,
the last named jaw face being provided with teeth, said movable j awbeing provided with angular jaw faces coacting with the jaw faces of said head toreceivework" to be held, the jaw of the movable headcoaoting with the last named jaw being providedw-ith teeth coacting with the teeth of thelast named jaw.
4. A wrench comprising a head having angularly disposed j aw faces, a recess formed in said head and opening throughone of the jaw faces, said head having slots formed in the side walls thereof substantially paralleling the last named jaw and communieating with said recess, a movable jaw having a leg extending into the recess and pro vided withangular portions operating in the last named slots, a spring disposed within the recess, and cam faces formed upon the lower end of said leg and adapted to alternately engage said spring to maintain the movable jaw in adjusted position.-
5, A wrench embodying a head havinga cutout portion forming angularly disposed jaw faces, a shiftable and tiltable jaw likewise provided with angular jaw faces ada'pted to coact with adjacent jaw faces of the head for the reception of material to be held, the coaction of one pair of said faces forming an alligator wrench and the c0: action of the other pair of said faces form'- ing a wrench for engaging polygonal surfaces, and means for holding said movable jaw with either of the jaw faces thereof disposed to coact with its corresponding jaw face upon the head for the reception of work, the faces of the first named pair bearing gripping teeth coacting during the coaction of the last named pair of'fac'es to hold the jaw against shifting in one direction. v
6; A wrench embodying a head having a cutout portion forming angularly disposed jaw faces, a tiltable jaw likewise provided with angular jaw faces adapted to "coact with adjacent jaw faces of the head for the reception of material to be held, the coaction of one pair of said faces forming an alligator wrench and the coaction of the other pair of said faces forming a wrench for engaging polygonal surfaces, and means for holding said movable jaw with either of the jaw faces thereof disposed to coact with its corresponding jaw face upon the head for the reception of work, said holding means yielding to permit tilting of the tiltable head to bring either of the jaw faces thereof into coaction with the corresponding jaw face of the head of the wrench.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my 15 signature.
GEORGE W. KELLEY.
