Description

Dec. 8,1925- 1.564.222
C. L. DUNLAP WRENCH Filed March .24, 1924 V ga g Patented Dec. 8, 1925.
UNITED STATES CHARLES I1. DUNLAP, OF MEDINA, OHIO.
WRENCH.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. DUNLAI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medina, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a removable jaw for solid wrenches and the like and has for its prime object to provide a device of this nature possessing a very simple structure which is capable of being manufactured at a low cost and yet will be reliable in use, durable, and well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a remm able jaw of this nature which may be easily and quickly slipped into the jaw of a solid wrench and will retain its position against accidental displacement.
lVith the above and numerous other ob jects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in cer tain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of one end of a solid wrench showing my jaw positioned therein,
Figure 2 is a section taken through the end of the wrench and centrally through my improved jaw, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that l designates the shank of a solid wrench of conventional construction provided at one end with the usual integral non-enclosed jaw 2 of U-shape and in which my removable jaw is adapted to he slipped.
of the j aw Application filed March 24, 1924.
Serial No. 701,538.
My removable jaw includes a U-shaped body indicated generally at 3 and formed with a curved intermediate portion 4 from which extend the two arms 5 the outer faces of which are channeled or grooved as is indicated at 6 and thus these arms are U-shaped in cross section.
A spring plate 7 is fixed to the intermediate portion l of the removable jaw as at 8 and is tensioned so as to frictionally engage one side of the wrench 1 when the jaw is positioned as indicated in Figures 1 and 2 thus preventing accidental displacement of the jaw. This jaw, however, may be readily placed in and moved out of engagement with the wrench upon grasping the same between the fingers.
This device may be made in several sizes so that difierent nuts may be efficiently engaged by the same wrench. The devices, of course, may be manufactured at a lower cost than the solid wrenches and thus a set of these devices with one wrench would cost much less than a set of the usual solid wrenches.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
In combination with a wrench comprising a shank having an integral jaw at one end, a U-shaped supplemental jaw member adapted to fit into the aforesaid integral jaw, means to retain said jaws in the same plane, and a spring plate carried by the intermediate portion of the supplemental jaw and tensioned to spring inwardly of the supplemental jaw toward the integral jaw for frictionally engaging a side of the integral jaw of the wrench to hold the supplemental jaw in place.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
CHARLES L. DUNLAP.
