Description

T OFFICE.
ALEXANDER-CRUIOKSBANK, 0F CLAYBURN, IBIRC'IISIEI COLUMBIA, CANADA.
PLIERS.
T 0 all whom it may cof/wem:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER CRUIGK- sHANK, a citizen of the Dominion of Qanada, residing at Clayburn, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
vthe iaw securing pawl in the retaining position, the dot and dash lines showing therelease position of the pawl, and
Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
In these drawings 2, 3 represent the opposed plier members Vwhich are pivotally connected together by the screw or rivetl 4L, and the jaws of which are serrated as at 5, to aiford an eficient hold.
Concentric with the pivot 4 one edge of the memberl 3 is notched as at 6 with a series of teeth adapted to receive the end 7 of a securing pawl pivoted at 8 to the adjacent portion of the other member` 2.
This pawl 7 has a portion 9 projecting from the side opposite its pivot 8 and having a resilient tendency toward the edge of 3. This portion 9 has a projection l10 from its end which is ygrooved as shown in Figure 2 and engages the edge of the handle portion of 2 (see dotted lines Figure'l) and retains the pawl in or out of holding engagement with the notches 6 of the member 3. according as it is on onev side or the otherv of the handle member 2.
Although for purposes of illustration the pawl notches'm are shown as coarsely pitched they may be of any size, consistent with strength that will serve the requirements of the graduation'in the jaw opening of the pliers.
Y The pliers may thus be set to any desired width of opening within their scope, while the pawl 7 is clear of the notches 6, and the pawl be then moved into engagement Specicaton of Letters Patent. Paijnted Aug. 22, 1922.'
Application `filed July 11,
1921. Serial No. 483,884.
The pliers may then be used as a ywrench without the requirement of having to grip the handle members together.
It will be noted that the addition of this securing means to the pliers does not interfere with theirfree use as such.
The use of such pliers for holding the head of a bolt while the nut is being screwed on or ofi', or for tightening a nut on the bolt is growing in favor, as the tool is a convenient one for this purpose. Thefaddition set forth in the foregoing renders the pliers more serviceable in'suchuse.
Having now particularly described mv invention, I hereby declare that what I claimas new and desire to be Letters Patent, is:
vl. The combination 'with `a pair of pliers, the handle and jaw' members of which areprotected in by l ber concentric with the pivot about which the plier members move, said pawl having a resilient arm provided with a grooved end adapted to spring over the edge of the handle of the plier member on which said pawl is pivot-ally mounted to hold said pawl out of engagement with said notches. 2. The combination with a pair of pliers, the handle and jaw members of which are pivotally connected together, one yof said pliers having ratchet teeth, apawl pivoted to the other plier member and adapted to engage said ratchet teeth to retain the plier members a definite4 distance apart, the said pawl having a resilient portion with a projection adapted to engage the handlc portion of the plier member to which it is pivoted to retain the pawl in or out of holding engagement kwith the ratchet teeth accordingly as it is desired to'retain the plier members a definite distance apart or not In witness whereof -I have aiiixed myl signature.
ALEXANDER cRUioKsHANK.
