[o all whom it mog/'concern' Be it known that I, ZENO M. BA`1N,a citizen of the United States,y residing at Coffee Creek, in the county of Fergus and State of Montanalhaveinvented new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the follo-W ing is a specification. y
This invention relates to pliers especially adapted for use in gripping nuts and the like.
Briefly stated, an important object of this invention is Ato provide a pair of' pliers which may be securely engaged with a nut or other object by means of a tightening device associated with the handles.
A further object of this invention is to provide a pair of pliers having a jaw actuating mechanism which may be conveniently folded so as to occupy but a minimum amount of space when the same is not in use.` A further object is to provide a pair ofv pliers which are of highly simplified construction, durable in use, and cheap` to manufacture.
VOther objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numerals 5 and 6 designate a pair of handles, the forward portions of which are provided with jaws 7 and 8, respectively. The jaws 7 and 8 have their opposed sides formed with transverse teeth 10 and short longitudinal teeth l1 at the forward ,ends thereof. The arrangement of teeth Villustrated in Fig. 3 is especially useful in gripping flat or round` headed bolts to hold the same against turning. With reference to this gure it will be seen that the forward portions ofthe jaws khave longitudinal teeth which Acooperate withthe transverse teeth in gripping av roundV headed bolt or the `like to yhold the s' same' against turning. The rearportions of the jaws are provided with knife-like edges l2 to cooperate in cutting wire or the like.
Particular attention isdirected to the fact that the jaws 7 and 8 may be provided with lateral enlargements to provide a generous bearing or contact surface for `engaging nuts or other objects to be gripped. Of course, the teeth are extended over the enlargements and one or both of these may be provided with short teeth 76.
The rear portion o-f the handle 6 is provided with a U-shaped member16 having a stem `18 extending through and securely connected to thehan-dle by riveting or otherwise. Fig. l plainly illustrates that the U- shapedY member 16 has pivotal connection with a threaded rod 20 upon which a nut 22 is mounted. The nut 22 is provided with a reduced terminal portion which is received in the slottedrear end 26 ofthe handle 5. It will be seen that when the nut 22 is tightened the handles 5 and 6 will be drawn together for moving the jaws 7 and 8 into firm engagement with a nut or other object.
To provide a means whereby the nut ma be turned for lirmly gripping the jaws 7 and 8 with an object the nut 22 is provided with a lever 30 formed from a single length of material bent between its longitudinal `edges to provide a more or less channelled construction and the forward end of the lever is provided with ears 32 pivoted to opposite sides of the nut 22.
In operation the jaws 7 and 8 are engaged withV an object and the nut 22 and more particularly the reducedterminal portion of the same is received in the slotted rear end 26 of the handle 5 and the lever 30 is then turned about the threaded stem 2O so as to draw the handles 5 and 6 together. By reason of this arrangement the jaws may be quite as firmly gripped with the object as the jaws of a wrench or the like. In fact this provides a vise-like grip. Y

Having thus described the invention, what 1s claimed 1s:
1. A pair of pliers Vcomprising handles' having jaws, a shank permanently connected to one of said handles and having a pivot member, a stem connected'v tok saidi pivot member and being threaded, a nut threaded on said stem and having` a reduced terminal portion, one end of one of saidhandles being provided with a slot receivingthe reduced terminal portion* of'said nut, and a lever pivoted at its Jforward end to said nut and being of channeled construction to provide a groove for the reception of said stem.
2. A pair of pliers comprising jaws havingl handles, a stein pivotally connected to one of said handles and loeing threaded for the major portion of its length, a nut threaded on said `stem andadapted to engage one of said handles, and a lever bent between its longitudinal edges to provide a channel and having its forward end provided with a pairof earspivoted to opposite sides of said nut, said lever being adapted to receive said stem when the stem and the lever are 'in` parallel relation.
