Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 20, 1921. Serial No. 471,044.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. MINNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and has for its objects to provide a device of this character of comparatively simple construction, which will be efficient in operation and one which may be readily adjusted to accommodate nuts or pipes of varying sizes and locked into engaging position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention'comprises the novel details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the wrench,
Fig. 2 is an edge elevational view thereof,
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the fixed jaw and its component parts,
Fig. 4 is an elevational view, a portion thereof being broken away. of the operating lever and its cooperating links,
Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of the movable jaw,
Fig. 6 is a detailed perspective view of the movable jaw casing, and
Fig. 7 is a section taken on the line 77 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow. 7
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that 1 indicates the relatively fixed head or jaw of the wrench carried at the forward end of a main bar 2 which is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 3 for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. A handle 4: is attached to the rear end of the main bar 2 and a lateral extension 5 extends from this end and is either fixed thereto or may be formed integral therewith as shown in the present instance. The terminal of the extension 5 is provided with the aperture 6. The fixed jaw 1 has a tapering nose (the active face of which is provided with a transversely extending concave portion 8 which is suitably corrugated for frictionally engaging a pipe or other like device.
The movable jaw 9, shown to advantage in Fig. 5, is likewise provided with the corrugated concave transversely extending cutout portion 10 adapted to register with the portion 8 andis also provided with a lug 11 which with the edge of the fixed jaw 1 will form wire nippers. A casing 13 has its ends 14 suitably riveted to the movable jaw 9 and will incase the main bar 2 so as to be slidable thereon. The movable jaw 9 is provided with the shank 15 having a threaded aperture 16 extending therethrough for receiving the set screw 17 so that same may be screwed into binding engagement with the main bar 2 so as to hold the movable jaw in fixed relation thereto when so desired. This casing 13 is also provided with the two registering apertures 18 for receiving the pin 19 which will extend therethrough and through the slot 3 in the main bar 1 thus limiting the longitudinal movement of the movable jaw 9.
An operating lever 20 is provided with a bifurcated end portion 21 having registering apertures 22. This bifurcated end portion 21 is adapted to straddle the transverse extension 5 and a pin 23 will pass through the apertures 6 and 22 for pivoting these parts in relation to each other. A pair of links 24 are pivoted to the upper end of the blfurcated portion 21 by means of a pin 25 and are also in engagement with pin 19. As the operating lever-20 is moved from the handle 4 it will be seen that the movable jaw 9 will be moved away from the fixed jaw 1. After the jaws have been placed over the devlce to be grasped it will be seen that by pushing the operating lever 20 toward the handle 1 a firm grip may be had upon this device and if so desired the jaws may be locked in fixed position by means of the set screw 17.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have produced a device of comparatively simple construction, which is adapted for the attainment for the ends in view; but it is to be understood that I do not limit my self to the precise details herein set forth, inasmuch as minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. The combination with a bar provided with a longitudinal slot therein carrying a primary jaw, of a secondary jaw, a casing carried by the secondary jaw in slidable engagement with the bar, a pin passing through the casing and through the slot in the bar, a transverse extension provided on the bar, anoperating leverpivotally mounted on the transverse extension and operative connections between the lever anti the secondary jaw.
2. The combination with a bar having a end portion pivotally connected with the transverse extension on the bar, a pin passingthrough the casing and through the slot in the bar, and "operative connections between the pin and the operating lever.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
