presentinvention relates to wrenches andv moreparticularly to that class embodying a flexible device,.such as a chain, to embrace the object to be rotated.
The principal object of my inventionis to provide a wrench which is susceptible of quick adjustment to act upon objects, such as pipes, nuts, bolts, or fittings of various descriptions, and which may be effectively used in close or not readily accessible places where quick take up of the slack chain is essential.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a wrench which is well adapted for use on short lengths of pipe or nipples, in that it will not dent or cam in such pieces; a wrench susceptible of quick release; and, to provide a wrench which is inexpensive to manufacture, and susceptible of ready repair.
Other objects of my invention will appear in the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention and shown in operative relation to a pipe sec tion.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section on line 33 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a transverse section on line 44 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawing in detail, and wherein similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, the letter A designates a flexible gripping device such as a flat link chain: B a handle or opcrating lever; and. C a fulcrum or chain take-up.
Referring to the chain A. it is preferably made up of blocks 5. a number of which adjacent the fixed end of the chain are connected by side plates 6 having each of their longitudinal edges serrated as at 7 and, having a number of the blocks adjacent the free end of the chain connected by plain side plates 8. The side plates 6 and 8 are connected with the blocks 5 by pivot pins 9, the pins connecting the plates 8 with the blocks being extended beyond the plates 8 to provide lateral projections 10. clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. These pins may be held in place in any suitable manner for permitting of the removal thereof should any of the parts" of the chain become broken or mutilated.
Referring to the operating lever B, the same comprises ahandle 11 having a bifurcated -T shaped head 12 provided at one end thereof forming a pair of elongatedspaced plates 13 extending in angular relation trans-- versely of the handle and providing an elongated slot 14 having its major axis transversely of the axis of the handle 11, Provided at the upper end of the plates 13, and adjacent the outer ends thereof, are spaced hooks 15 provided with rearwardly opening concaved faces 16 for engagement with the lateral projections 10 of the chain A. The way 14 is enlarged at its upper end adjacent the spaced hooks 15, as at 17, for permitting the chain to readily be trained between the plates 13 and into operative engagement with the hooks. A cross pin 18 which passes through the plates 13 adjacent the lower ends thereof. is adapted to pass through the end block 19 of the chain A for pivotally attaching one end of the chain between the spaced plates 13 of the head 12.
Referring now to the fulcrum or chain take-up C, the same comprises a shoe 20 of substantially the same width as the head 12, and an integrally formed rearwardly extending reduced shank 21 which extends into the slot 14 between the spaced plates 13, and is pivotally connected at its rear end to the plates by a cross pin 22 disposed below the longitudinal center of the lever 11 and spaced nearer to the cross pin 18, than to the spaced hooks 15.
It will be seen from Figure 1, that by so positioning the pivot 22 with respect to the pin 18 and hooks 15 that when the handle 11 is raised, and pivots on pin 22. the arc of movement of the books 15 will be much greater'than the arc of movement of the pin 18, thereby permitting of a slightupward movement of the handle to swing the hooks 15 into a position for permitting of the ready attaching or detaching of the free end of the chain A. It will also be seen that when the handle is swung downwardly, the hook end of the head will move a greater distance than the lower end of the head for quick take-up of the slack in the chain, and upon further downward movement of the handle, a lever action will be created between the hooks 15 and pin 22 for forcing the concaved face 23 of the shoe into binding engagenient with the pipe or other object D to be rotated.
The object in so providing a substantial object engaging face upon the fulcrum C, is for preventing canting of the Wrench When pressure is exerted upon the handle in r0 pivotally connected at one end to and het-Ween the pair of plates at a point adjacent one end of the plates, means provided at the opposite end of the pair of plates for detachably connecting the free end of the chain therebetween, and a fulcrum member pivotally connected to and between the plates of the head at a point intermediate the ends of the plates, nearer to the pivotal point of attachment of the chain than to the detachable point of connection of the chain with the plates and embodying a shoe extending forwardly of the head of the rench and having a concaved Work engaging face.
