To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS SPENCER TARR, a subject of the King of England, residing at Pittville Garage, Winchcombe Street, Cheltenham, in the county of Gloucester England (whose post-office address is Pittville Garage, VVinchcombe Street, Cheltenham, in the county of Gloucester, England), have invented certain new and useful Improvements in C Spanners or renches for Slotted Nuts or Parts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to C-spanners or Wrenches for use with slotted nuts or parts having indentations or projections on a circular body.
Such spanners have heretofore been proposed comprising a handle with a fixed extension projecting on one side thereof and a pivoted claw projecting on the other side so that the nut or the like is enclosed between the fixed extension and the claw during the operation of the spanner.
According tothis invention the stationary jaw of the spanner or wrench forms a fixed extension to the handle as before while the movable jaw is connected to the handle, so as to extend in a direction opposite to that of the stationary jaw, by means of links or by flexible chains. The inner faces of both jaws are curved to a concave shape so as to fit on nuts or parts of different sizes and the movable jaw is provided with the usual hook at its forward end to engage the hole or slot in the nut or other partto be unscrewed.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein 2- Fig. 1 shows the movable jaw connected to the stationary jaw by links;
Fig. 2 shows the parts connected together by flexible chains; and
Fig. 3 shows the linked form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 1 as in use and with an indented circular part which it is required to rotate, such, for example as a slotted nut, or a valve cap.
In these drawings A is the stationary jaw formed in one piece with the lever handle A. B is the movable jaw provided at its forward end with a hookB. As previously stated the inner faces of both jaws are curved to a concave shape as shown at A and B and the jaws are so mounted that jaws are connected together by a link C,
and preferably one on each side; said link or links being pivoted to the handle at G.
In the form shown in Fig. 2 the jaws are connected by a chain or chains: C said chain being made up of a series of links pivotally connected together.
A wrench for circular or polygonal bodies has been proposed having concave and convex toothed jaws connected on each side by a pair of links or levers crossing one another and having their fulcrums or pivots arranged each in both jaws. And a peg spanner has been suggested in which the movable jaw is connected by links to the fixed jaw which latter is formed integrally with the spanner handle and extends in the same direction as the movable jaw the inner edges of the fixed jaw and the links combining with each other to constitute a continuous abutment edge capable of being wrapped around gapped nuts of varying diameters. In my invention the jaws of the spanner extend in opposite directions and the concavities of their inner faces are such as to obtain only three points of contact with nuts of all diameters, two contacts being made on the nut by the concavities A and B and the third by the hook B.
I claim 1. C-spanner or wrench for slotted nuts or parts, comprising a handle, a stationary jaw formed in one piece with the said handle and having a concaved inner face, and a movable jaw, a link connecting said movable jaw to said handle, said movable jaw extending in an opposite direction tothe stationary jaw and having a concaved inner face and a terminal hook or claw, whereby the wrench is caused to bear on at least three parts of a nut during operation.
