WRENCH.
Application filed October 31, 1923.
tions to facilitate the engagement of the jaws with an object.
/Vhile the invention is mainly designed for use on the nuts which hold the water spigot on the basin it will of course be un derstood that it may be used in other situations.
Another object of the invention is to provide a handle on the shank which extends at right angles with the shank and has a recess therein for engaging a pipe and acts to guide the wrench in its movement.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of the invention.
Figure 2 is an edge view.
Figures 3 and 4 are views showing how the wrench may be used.
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view showing the arrangement of the spring 10.
In these views 1 indicates the shank of the wrench which has a handle 2 connected with one end thereof, said handle extending at right angles with the shank and having an enlargement at one end which is pro vided with a rounded recess 3. The stationary jaw 4c is forked and is pivoted to the forked end of the shank, as shown at 5, so that said jaw can be moved to a position at Serial No. 671,979.
either side of the shank either at a right angle or at other angles in relation to the shank or it can be moved to a position where it will form a continuation of the shank. The gripping face of this jaw is rounded, as shown at 6, and its outer end is reduced, as shown at 7, to fit within the forked part of the movable aw S which is pivoted to the reduced part by the pin 9. This movable jaw is of hook shape so as to cooperate with the rounded gripping surface of the stationary jaw, the two jaws being formed to pro vide a pipe wrench.
From the above it will be seen that the jaws can be arranged at one side of the shank so as to tighten the nut or object or it can be arranged at the opposite side of the shank so as to remove a nut or object. By turning the jaw 4 to a position where it will form a continuation of the shank the Wrench can be used as an ordinary wrench. The recess in the extension of the handle will form a guide to hold the wrench in proper position by placing it in engagement with the pipe in tightening or loosening a lock nut on a spigot of a basin. This is shown in Figures 3 and 4. A spring 10 is placed in the movable for holding the same in its innermost position so that it will readily take hold of an object placed between the jaws.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A wrench of the class described comprising a shank, a stationary jaw pivotally connected with one end of the shank, a movable pivotally connected with the stationary jaw and a handle connected with the other end of the shank and having an extension provided with a guiding recess adapted to guide the bolt when the jaws engage a nut on said bolt.
2. A wrench of the class described comprising a shank having a forked end, a
forked member pivotally connected With nermost position a handle connected With said end and having a curved gripping face the shank and a guiding part on the handle at one side thereof, a hook-shaped jaw pivadapted to guide the bolt when the jaws 10 o'tally connected With the outer end of the engage a nut on said bolt. 7 member and forming With the gripping face In testimony whereof I affix my signature. thereofan object engagingfnieans', a spring for holding the hook shaped jaw in itsin ROBERT E.
