Description

J ne 12, 1928.
E. S. KARLSEN WRENCH Filed Dec. 19, 1925 Patented June 12, 1928.
UNITED STATES EUGENE s. KARLSEN, or onrcaeditrmors.
WRENCH.
Application filed December 1a, 1925. Serial no. 76,380.
This invention relates, generally, to wrenches, but has particular relation'to that type which has a movable or adjustable jaw to co-operate with another jaw fixed with respect to a shank, in holding or clamping a nut, pipe or the like to be turned by moving the shank as a handle in the proper direction.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a wrench, which, while more especially designed for use for general purposes, yet may be employed as a p1pe wrench, or for turning cylindrical ob ects, which shall be extremely simple and inexpensive in construction, of but a few parts, easily assembled or disassembled.
Another object of the invention is to furnish a wrench of an improved construc tion whereby the movable jaw may be readily adjusted with respect to the fixed jaw and shank upon which said fixed jaw is rigidly mounted, so that the distance between the adjacent faces of said jaws may be readily increased or diminished to accommodate the wrench for different sizes of nuts or work, and when so adjusted, the movable jaw may be fixed with respect to the fixed jaw in a positive, firm and easy manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide the guide-way for the stem of the movable jaw with two diagnonally disposed bearing portions, to the end, that the wrench as a whole, may be moved back and forth in its operation, without any possibility of the movable jaw becoming loose or ratcheting, thereby rendering the wrench adaptable for turning its work in either d1 rection.
Other objects and advantages of the 1nvention will be disclosed in the subj oined description and explanation.
In the accompanying drawing which serves to illustrate an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side view in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a detached perspective new of a portion of the shank of the wrench showing the fixed aw extended forwardly therefrom and the said shank and jaw provided with a guide-way having diagonally disposed hearing or engaging portions, and
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the device.
Similar reference numerals designate like parts throughout the different views of the drawings.
Referring now more particularly to Figs.
1' and 2 of the drawing, 4, designates the shank of the wrench,'which shank is herein tends longitudinally with respect to the shank. This fixed jaw 5, is of about the same thickness as that of the shank 4, and as shown, has on its rear lower portion an extension 7, provided with spaced teeth or serrations 8, arranged on said extension 7, in. an upwardly and outwardly inclined row. Between its base 9, and the shoulder 10, with which the shank is provided near its plate or part 11, which joins it to the jaw 5, atransverse guide-way 12, is provided for the stem 6, of the movable jaw 13, which stem is provided with a longitudinal slot 14, for the reception of a set-Screw 15 adapted to extend through the slot 14, and to engage an opening 16, in the plate or portion 11, which as before stated, unites the upper end of the shank 4, and the lower end of the jaw 5, or fixed jaw.
As is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the upper or front surface of the shoulder 10, is angular in shape, that is to say, it is made with a portion 17, of its surface arranged so as to incline outwardly in about the same inclination in which the teeth 8, are arranged, so that the stem 6,,
when placed in the guide-way 12, will rest against the inclined portion 17, while the teeth 18, on the upper surface of the stem 6, will engage some of the teeth 8, on the extension 7, in which position, the stem 6, can be firmly held by tightening up the set-screw 15. When the parts are so arranged it is apparent that the adjacent faces of the jaws 5, and 13, will be in parallelism and that the movable jaw 13, will be positively held against any ratcheting or loose movement. When it is desired to adjust the movable jaw with respect to the fixed jaw, it is only necessary to loosen the set-screw 15, when it will be understood that the stem 6, can be moved to the proper position to allow of its back and forth movement so as to increase or diminish, to suit the work, the distance between the operating faces of the two jaws, when thus suitably adjusted the set-screw may be tightened which will firmly and positivel hold the movable jaw and its stem in suc a way as to prevent any flexible or loose movement of said jaw.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure b Letters Patent is V In a wrench, the combination with a shank having a stationary jaw, a series of teeth on said shank arranged in a diagonally inclined row with respect to said shank, an adjustably movable jaw provided with a slotted. arm extending at an acute angle therefrom and having teeth thereon along one edge whereby to cooperate with said diagonally inclined teeth, and a guide-way on said shank for receiving said arm, a pivot element in said guideway and] passing through .said slot in .said movable jaw arm, one edge of said
