This invention relates to wrenches, an object of` the invention `being to prov-ide a wrench in which the movable jaw may be easily adjusted relative to thefixed jaw Iand then secured against movement so as to insure a perfect operation of the wrench. i
A further obj ect is to provide a wrench having improved construction and shapeof xed .and movable aws, improved mounting therefor, and improved operating means therefor.
With these and .other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. l j Y In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved wrench; x
Figure 2 is a view, mainly in longitudinal section, of the wrench, a portion of t-he wrencfh being shown in elevation;
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation of a portion of the wrench taken at right angles to Figure l; h
Figure 4 is a view in elevation of a portion of a wrench, looking at the rear of the wrench shown in Figure 1;
F igure 5 is a view'in transverse section on the line 5 5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a view in transverse section on the line 6 6 of Figure 1.
1 represents the xed jaw of my improved wrench, which is made integral with a shank 2.V This shank 2 adjacent the operative end of the jaw is made angular, as shown at 8, and on the faceof this angular portion a web 4 is formed. The major portion of the shank is screw-threaded, as clearly shown.
4 represents my improved vmovable jaw which has an angular opening 5 receiving the angular portion 3 of shank 2. In other Words, this j aw is made with an angular portion 5 so as to receive the shank and move thereon, and is also made with a longitudinal groove 6 to receive the web 4 and insure a longitudinal sliding engagement and a rigid holding means against independent lateral movement of the jaws. The web 4 and the groove 6 are of such shape as to key the parts together, as shown in Figure 6.
The jaw 4 is recessed, as shown at 7 to accommodate a thumb nut 8 having' screw lthreaded engagement with the shank 2,. so that by turning this nut 8 the movable jaw may be adjusted relative to the fixture.
form externally and hasinternal screw I may provide a set screw 12in `this handle Qirepresents handle which of cylindrical `to engage the threads of the ,shank lto lock the J handle against movement'after adjustment. Aspacing sleevev13 ispositioned around the shank 2between the movable Vjaw 4 andthe handle 9, as clearly shown.
I, would'call particular attention-to,v the shape of the fixed and movable jaws where they engage a nut `bolt ,orfotherdeviceV The fixed jaw has a somewhat egg-shapedopening 14 therein, and hasjan .extension 15y on `one facewhicli Vis opposed tothe operating member 16 of the movable jaw 4.
These parts 15 and 16 are of angular form internally, or-in other words, their opposing faces are out on an angle so as to properly engage a nut or bolt head, and by reason of the general egg-shape of the opening 14 a nut on -a shaft may be readily removed, the opening 14 accommodating the shaft or bolt whether said shaft or bolt be central of the ,opening or at a position beyond the center.
I have illustrated in dotted lines-in Figure 2, the position ofk the nut and bolt in the wrench so that it will be observed that the wrench can' be positioned on the nut regardless of the length of the bolt and can be conveniently operated to remove the nut.
The inner or operating face of the movable jaw 4 is provided with a groove 17 there-` in which may accommodate the key on a shaft or bolt and may function to engage any part of a device to be held or removed;
The operation is as follows:
The thumb nut 8 is turned to position the movable jaw as may be desired, and then the handle 9 is turned to clamp the parts against movement and, if the wrench is to beopened the handle part 9 must screwed a certain distance and then the movabledjaw can be adjusted to the position desire of course first be unwhile i have iiiuamed what i believe to be a preferred embodiment of my inventionv it is obvious various changes and alterations Vmight be made in the general form of the parts described without departing 'from the invention and hence I do not limit myself to s l i y I the precise details set forth but consider myi self at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A wrench of the character described, including a fixed jaw, a screw'threa-ded stein on the jaw having an angular portion, a web on the angular portion of the steam, a movable jaw having a recess receiving the angular stem and keyed to the web and having a lateral recess therein, a thumb 'nut in the lateral recess and on thel thread of the stem for moving the movablev jaw, a handle having screw threaded engagement with the stem, and a spacing sleeve between the handle and the movable jaw.
2.1A wrench of the character described, comprising a fixed jaw, a'stemv secured to the fixed jaw anda movable jaw mounted to slide on the stem, one of said jaws having an opening therein of general egg-shape, and an ex-r tension projecting from the jaw having the opening therein, saidfextensionfand the other jaw having opposed angular faces.
3. A wrench ofV the character described, comprising a xed jaw a stein secured to the fixed jaw anda movable jaw mounted to slide on the stem, one of said jaws having an opengular aces having a shaft key receiving groove therein.
4. A wrench of the` character described,
including a fixed jaw, a screw threaded steni on the jaw having an angular portion, a' web lon the angular portion of the stein, a movable jaw having a recess receiving the angular stein and lit over the web and having a lateral recess therein, a thumb nut in the lateral recess and on the thread of the stem for moving the movable jaw, a handle having screw threaded engagement with the stem, a
spacingsleeve between the handle and the j Y movable jaw, and a screw in the handle adapted to engage'the threads of the stein.
