G. CAZENAVE.
PIPE WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED FEB--11, 1920- Patented Dec.' .7, 1920.

PIPE-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7,. 1920.
Application filed February 11, 1920. Serial No. 357,911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT CAZENAVE, a citizen of France, and a resident of Detroit, in the county of WVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in pipe wrenches, and has for its object to provide. a wrench of the character specified wherein a relatively fixed jaw is provided and a relatively movable jaw loosely slidable on the fixed jaw, and a handle lever having a support adjustably connected with the fixed jaw, the handle being pivoted to the support and having a cam for engaging the movable jaw to move it toward the fixed jaw.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved wrench;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the movable aw- J Fig. i is a view of the worm.
In the present embodiment of the invention a shank 1 is provided, having at one end a fixed 2, extending laterally from the shank, and the shank has teeth 3 at the opposite side from the fixed jaw. The movable aw, indicated at 4, has a loop 5 rigidly connected therewith and extending laterally therefrom, and the arms of the loop embrace the and are secured thereto as shown, and this loop is mounted to slide loosely on the shank.
The handle is in the form of a lever 6 having a grip 7 at one end. and pivoted at the other end to a support 8. This support has a vertical opening 9 through which the shank 1 is slidable, and a worm 10 is journaled in the support, the worm engaging the teeth 3 of the shank.
As shown in Fig. 1, the support is cut away intermediate its top and bottom at the worm, to form two bearing lugs 11 in which the worm is journaled, and the worm has reduced journal pins 12 at its ends for engaging the bearing lugs. It will be noticed,
referring to Figs. 1 and 4, that the threads of the worm are cut away at one side, as indlcated at 13, and when this side is brought into register with the shank it will be obvious that the teeth 3 will slip idly past the jaw.
In use, the movable jaw is adjusted toward the fixed jaw to grip the object by releasing the worm and moving the support 8 and the movable jaw toward the ob'ect which is engaged by the fixed jaw. W en the coarse adjustment is made the worm is turned to bring the thread thereof into engagement with the teeth 3. When now the handle lever 6 is swung in a direction to turn the pipe or other object to be turned, the cam head will engage the movable jaw and will clamp it tightly on the object to be turned.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the engaging faces of the jaws are recessed, the walls of the recess meeting at a right angle, so that when the jaws are in contact the opening between them will be square. The jaws may be adapted for gripping smaller objects by providing interchangeable fillers or interchangeable jaws. Referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that each of these fillers 15 is a block shaped to fit the recessed face of the movable aw, and having a pin 16 which is adapted to engage an opening 17 in the movable jaw. That corner remote from the corner of the block provided with the pin 16 is recessed, as shown at 18, for receiving the object to be turned, and when the filler is in place the object will be gripped between the movable jaw and between the filler block.
I claim:
A wrench comprising a handle, a trunnion formed on one end of the handle and including cylindrical end portions and an intermediate cam portion, a support having opposite sides formed with circular holes forming bearings for said cylindrical end portions of the trunnion and having an ina Worm journaled between said ears and termediate recess for the accommodation of meshing with the rack teeth, a U-shaped 10 said cam portion, said recess extending to yoke slidable upon said shank, and a jaw one edge of the support, said support being secured between the arms of the yoke and formed with an opening and spaced ears, a engageable by said cam portion of the shank slidable through said opening and betrunnion.
ing formed With a fixed jaw, the outer edge of the shank being formed Withrackteeth, GILBERT CAZENAVE.
