Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.
Application filed October 13, 1915. Serial No. 55,705.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES R. SAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Pipe Wrenches and Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combination pipe wrenches and cutters.
In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide a device of the class described which may be readily and quickly converted from a pipe wrench into a pipe cutter and vice versa and wherein the space between the jaws will be closed so as to prevent accidental removal of the device from the pipe through the use thereof.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my present invention, the same being shown in use as a cutter and applied to the pipe, the pipe being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the device in use as a wrench. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device. Fig. 4: is a cross sectional view therethrough. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the block. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the movable jaw detached from the stationary jaw. Fig. 7 is a like view of the yoke.
Referring now to the drawing in detail 1 designates a shank having one end equipped with a handle 2 and the opposite end widened as at 3 and formed with a substantially fiat edge 4: arranged vat right angles to the shank. Also formed on the shank 1 adjacent to the flat edge 4: is an outwardly projecting lug 5 having the rear edge formed with a shoulder 6 adjacent to the outer end thereof. The fiat edge i is serrated as at 7 and constitutes the stationary jaw of the wrench.
8 designates the movable jaw which is substantially U-shaped and is bifurcated as at 9 and pivoted to the stationary jaw at one end thereof, and the opposite end formed with a pivot lug 10.
11 designates a yoke 9 straddling the lug 10 and pivoted thereto by means of a pin 12 and adapted to be swung over the lug 5 as shown in the drawings so as to hold the movable jaw in proper relation to the fixed jaw. The central member of the yoke 11 is formed wlth an opening and threaded through this opening is a? set screw 18 adapted to engage the rear edge of the lug 5 between the shoulder and the adjacent edge of the shank, to draw the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw 21nd hold the movable jaw in adjusted posiion.
l/Vhen applying the wrench to a pipe the yoke is swung to open position and the movable jaw swung away from the fixed jaw so that the device may be applied to the pipe. After the application of the wrench to the pipe the movable jaw is swung to closed position and encircling the pipe and the yoke is swung over the lug 5 and the set screw 13 moved into engagement with the lug 5 behind the shoulder 6 thereby holding the movable jaw in proper position relatively to the fixed jaw and preventing accidental removal of the wrench from the pipe.
In accordance with my present invention the movable jaw 8 is formed with a slot 14: disposed between the ends thereof and when it is desired to use the device as a pipe cutter, the cutter disks 15 are placed in the slot 1d and these cutter disks are carried by the pivot pins 16 detachably mounted in bearing openings formed in the side walls of the slot. 17 designates a blcck adapted to be placed upon'the serrated edge of the fixed jaw when the device is used as a cutter and to cooperate with the cutter disks 15. One face of the block 17 is formed with a groove 18 designed to receive the serrated edge of the fixed jaw, while the opposite side of the block is formed with a concavity 19 designed to embrace the adjacent portion of the pipe being cut and cooperating with the cutter disks. This block is equipped with a set screw 20 whereby the same may be held in position on the stationary jaw. When the device is in use as a wrench, the block 17 is removed from the stationary jaw and applied to one edge of the shank, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and acts as a thumb grip to facilitate the use of the wrench.
While I have herein shown and described one particular form of my invention I wish it to be understood that I do nct limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated,
having one end pivoted to said stationary jaw at one extremity thereof, a lug formed on said shank and projecting outwardly therefrom, a Ushaped yoke pivoted to the other end of said movable aw and adapted to straddle said lug to hold the movable jaw in proper position relatively to the fixed jaw, and a set screw threaded through the central portion of said yoke and adapted to engage said lug to hold the yoke upon the lug.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES R. SAYLOR.
