movable jaws, and the provision of means in connection with the movable jaw whereby it may be readily adjusted to close upon the object operated on. y l
A further object of the invention is to provide for operating the jaws while the wrench is in use and by the hand of the .operator which grasps the wrench, and a further object in this connection is to provide means whereby no strain comes upon the pivots whereby the movable jaw `is linked to the operating handle so that these pivot pins or rivets will not bend under strain. Y
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention lis illustratedin the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the wrench.
Referring to these figures, 10 designates the shank of a wrench having at one end the angularly disposed jaw 11 formed with the usual teeth 12. The inside face of this jaw below the teeth 12 is formed with a recess 13 and below this recess the shank 10 is formed with the integral outwardly eX- tending arm 14 which is bifurcated as at 15 for nearly its entire depth.
Pivoted within the recess 13 is a movable jaw 16 which is toothed upon that face which confronts the teeth 12, this j aw at its rear extremity being reduced in thickness and this reduced end being inserted within the recess 13 and being pivoted to the shank 10 by means of the pivot pin or rivet 17. The under edge face of the jaw 16, that is, that edge face which confronts the handle end of the wrench, is formed with a re-y cess 18.
Pivotally mounted between the portions 15 of the arm 14 is a handle 19. `This handle at one end is angularly extended to provide an ear 20 which extends up between the portionsrl and is pivoted thereto by means of the pivot pin 21, rivet or like device. The upper end of the handle rear ward of the extension 20 is recessed, as at 22, and having its end pivoted in this recess is a link 23, the opposite end of which is pivoted within the recess 18 of the movable jaw 16. The length of the link 23 is such that when the handle or actuating member 19 is closed against the shank 10 the jaw 16 will be held in an approximately parallel relation to the jaw 11 and that when the handle 19 is turned outward as far as possible the extremity of the jaw 11 will bear against the extremity of the extension 20.
As willbe particularly 'noted from Fig. 1, the opposite ends of the link 23 bear'at all times against the walls of therecesses 18 and 22, respectively. As a consequence no strain comes upon the pivot pins 24 and 25 whereby the link is connected to the mov? able jaw and to the handle. Thus there is no danger of the pivot pins giving away pressure comes directly under strain and all upon the link.
It will further be'noted that by my par-4 ticular construction I secure a great lever-4 age on the movable jaw 16 and that the jaw isheld closed against an object by the pressure of the operatorsv handV around the shank 10 and the handle 19 and that it is a relatively easy matter to relieve this pressure by slightly opening the hand and then reapplying this pressure by closing the hand. Thus the wrench may be used for turning sections of pipe, couplings or like articles without removing the wrench from its engagement but simply by oscillating the wrench. Itis of course obvious that the wrench may be equally well used for removing bolts and in other ways applied in the manner common to wrenches. It will be seen that the movable j aw is held from any sidewise movement under strain not only by having its reduced end inserted within the recess 13 but by the further fact that the link 23 lits relatively closely between the arms 15 and isV guided thereby, and that lateral strain placed upon the movable j aw which would tend to bend it is resisted by the body of the link itself.
TvVhile I have illustrated a construction wherein the movable jaw 16 is spaced from rio i n claim is including` a shank having a fixed jaw, a mov- 1. A` wrench of the character described able jaw pivoted to the shank, said shank having an outwardly projecting arm below the movable jaw, a handlepivoted to said arm and being thereby movable toward or from the shank, and a link pivoted rto the upper end of thehandle between the free end thereof and its point of pivotal connection to the arm, the upper end of the link being pivoted to the movable jaw.
2 A wrench of the character described v including a shank having a fixed jaw,` a movable jaw pivoted tothe shank, said shank having an outwardly projected bifurcated arm disposed below the movable jaw, a
handle having an extension pivoted in said bifurcated arm, said handle being vthereby movabler toward or from the shank, 'and a link pivoted tothe upper end of the handle, passing upward through thebifurcated'arm and Vpivoted to the movable jaw.
` 3. A wrench of thecharacter described in-y cluding a shank having at one end a fixed y jaw and recessed adjacent the fixed jaw upon kits inside face, a'movable jaw having a reduced portion disposed within said recess Copies of this patent may be obtained for Larm and being guided thereby.
and pivoted to the shank, saidy shank below the movable jaw being formed with a bifur- V cated arm, ka handle having an upward extension pivotally mounted in the extremity of Vthebifurcated arm, the `upper end of the handle inward of said extension being recessed and the confronting face vof the movable jaw being also recessed,y and a link hav-V ing its ends inserted iny said recesses and pivoted operatively to the handle and jaw, said link"` passing through the bifurcated 4. A rwrench of the character described including a shank having at one end a fixed jaw and recessed adjacent the fixed jaw, upon its inside face,y a movable Vjaw having a reduced portion disposed within said recess and pivoted to the shank, said shank below Y the movable jaw being formed witha bifurcated arm, a handle having an rupward extension pivotally mounted in the extremity Y of the bifurcated arm, the upper' end of the handle inward of said extension being ref cessed and the confronting face lof the movable jaw being also recessed, and a link having its ends inserted 1n said recesses and f pivoted operatively to the'handle and jaw,
said link passing through' the4 bifurcated arm and being guided thereby, the extremiand handle respectively;
Iny testimony whereof I hereuntoaiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. Y j LEONARD BRANHAM.
