Be it known that I, HERWY V7. SMALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Small, in the county of Clark, State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches and particularly to the class of sliding jaw wrenches.
@ne object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved locking means for the sliding jaw which can be easily and quickly released when the jaw is to be moved out of engagement with the work.
Another object is to provide a locking means for the slidable jaw which can be easily and quickly reached for adjustments and repairs.
Other objects and advantages will be ap` parent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench made in accordance with the invention partly in section; the cover plate being indicated in dotted lines as thrown back and the locking detent in engaged position.

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, represents a shank having the hand grip 11 on one end and the jaw 12 on the other end. The intermediate portion 13 of the shank is enlarged and formed'with a transverse and elongated longitudinally extending opening therethrough shown at 14. Slidable through the enlargement 13 is the shank 15 of the movable jaw 15, said shank having on one of its edge faces the ratchet teeth 16. A removable cover plate 17 is secured over one side of theopening 14, the other side being closed by the side wall which forms a part of the enlargement. ln onewall of the opening 14 there is formed a recess'18 of approximate circular outline,` which hasan outwardly flaring mouth 19. Disposed within the circular portion of the recess is the rounded head of the member 20, the' outer portion 20"having sides 21 whichr taper inwardly toward the head and permit free rocking movement of the member/in the recess. Formed integrallyv with, or attached, as desired, to the member 20 is a leaf spring 22 which extends to va point adjacent the other end of the opening' 14 where one of its flat faces is engaged be tween the pins 23 carried by the shorter.-l
arm of the angle lever 25 which is pivotallyv supported in the opening 14, at 24. The lever 25 projects through a slot 26 in the rear edge face of the enlargement,andiis adapted to be grasped and rocked to cause the pins 23 to flex-the leaf spring and rock the member 20 within the recess 18. On the inner end of the member 20 are formed ratchet teeth 27 which engage with the ratchet teeth of the shank 15 of the movaf' as to release its teeth from the teeth of the shank 15', thus permitting the movable jaw 15, and its shank to be slipped'inwardly or outwardly, as the case may require.
The outer end of the shank 10 cated at .10 to receive therein the shank 12 of the jaw 12, which shank is .pivotally mounted within said bifurcation for swingward swinging movement being limited by the sleeve 11 of the jaw 15. In the inner end of the jaw 15 is cut a notch or recess 28 into which the shank ofthe jaw 12 is arranged to move when the jaw is swung in that direction. A recess'29 is formed in the is bifur- L ing movement toward the` jaw 15. its rearv shank 10,` inwardly of the `inner end of the j shank 12, and secured in this recess is a leafl spring 30 whose outer end bears against a lug 31, formed on the inner end of the shank 12, to exert pressure on said shank, for the purpose of yieldably maintaining the jaw 12 in itsnormal rearwardrposition as shown in Figure 1.
Formed longitudinally through the hand grip 11 and receiving the inner end portion v ol the shank l5 is a bore 32 and disposed in this here and embracing the reduced end of the said shank is a ooil spring 33. ln the outer end of the bore is screwed a Closure plug 34 against which the other end of the spring 33 hears. This spring exerts pressure on the shank l5 so that when the lever 25 is mover to release the teeth 27 from the teeth 16. the spring,` will force the shank l5 outwardly and thus dispose the jaw l5 against the work.
lt will be noted that the reteiict teeth ot both the member 2O and the shank l5 are arranged to permit the ready sliding or the shank l5 to move the jaw l5 toward the jaw lf2., but will engage each other and prevent movement of the jaw l5 away :from the jaw l2, with the result that the jaw may he quickly and easily adjusted to the work, and irnily held in such position. To release the aw l5, and permit movement thereof, awayY 'from the jaw l2, the lever must be swung outwardly through the slot 2G, with the result that the lea'f spring will straighten out and permit the member 20 to rock and disengage its teeth `llrom the teeth of the shank l5.
By reason of the fact that the jaw l2 is pivotally mounted in the shank l0, permits the said aw to move'into gripping relation to the work, so that the other jaw l5 will be also held against the work. rlhus the same jaws serve to operate on nuts and round work, such as bars, or pipes.
Vllhat is claimed is:
l. A wrench including a shank, a toothed shank slidahle in the first shank, a roekable toothed member mounted in the vfirst shank and enga-ging' the teeth ot the seeond shank,
an angle lever mounted in the irst shank, and a resilient means secured to the rookable memher and loosely engaged with one arm oi the lever for moving,` the rockable member into end out et engagement with the toothed shank.
