Be it known that I, .VVILLIAM F. ,Mc; (31mm, a citizenhof the United. States, residing at Elkins, in the, county of Randolph and State of est Virginia, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Compound Tools, oiiwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a Compound tool of the pincer type and the principal 0bject of the invention istoprovide a tool of the character described so constructed that a bit may be grasped between the jaws of apairof pliers; and the handles of the pliers releasably connected to firmly hold the jaws of the pliers in engagement with the head of the bit.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the head of the bit that when gripped by the plier jaws the bit will be prevented from having longitudinal or transverse movement.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Fi ure 1 is a view in'elevation showing the bit engaged by the pliers and the handles of the pliers connected by the latch. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken along theline 22 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but taken at right angles thereto. Fig. 1 is a transverse sectirnal view taken along the line 44 of F in. 1. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view through the handles and latchtaken along the line 55 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken along the line 66 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a modified form of bit. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of still another modified form of bit.
The pliers or wire cutters as they are sometimees called are provided with the jaws 10 and 11 which are carried by the handles 12 and 13 pivotally connected at the joint 1 1 by means of the pivot pin 15.
These jaws 10 and 11 will be provided with the usual cut-out 16 forming'the wire receiving pocket and also provided with the abutment shoulders 17. It should be further noted that the pliers are provided with the usual cutters 18 and have the sides of the jaws cut away to provide the abutment shoulders 19. I

Therefore the jaw 10 will prevent the bit from moving longitudinally and the 11 will preventit from moving transversely."
This arrangement will also prevent the bit from moving pivotal-1y and therefore theybit place when engaged by the jaws.
In Fig. 8 there is shown a form. somewhat similar to the form shown in Figs. 1-
and 2 but in this form the seat 22 is done away with and a flange 24 provided between the flanges 23. Therefore the jaw 11 will fit between the flanges 23 and 24 with the flange 24 engaging the abutment shoulders 17 and the flanges 23 engaging the abutment shoulders 19. It should be noted that l ineach form the flanges 23 engage the shoulders 19 to assist in preventing longitudinal movement. It should be further noted that it is immaterial whether the bit is put in place with the jaw 11 between the flanges23 or with the jaw 10 between the flanges. In Fig. 7 therehasbeen shown another modifiwhat similar to the form shownin Figs. 1 and 2 but the seat 22 is omitted, the roughened gripping faces of the jaws 10 and 11 being depended upon to prevent the bit from movingoutwardly and the flanges 23 engaging the abutment shoulders 19 to prevent the bit from slipping inwardly when pressure is applied. The latch 25 is provided with hinge ears 26 which are pivotally connected with the hinge ear 27 of the handle 12 by means of the pin 28. The free end ofthe-latch is provided with a socket 29 to receive the hook 30 of the handle 13 thereby permitting the handle 13 to be. releasably connected with the handle 12.
It should be noted, that the pliers are formed of resilient material such for instance as forged steel and therefore the handles will have a spring action causing a binding engagement between the hook 30 and latch 25. It. is necessary to compress the handles slightlyin order to engage the.

When this device is in use the bit is put in place between the jaws and the jaws then moved into tight engagement with the head of the bit by pressing upon the handles 12 and 13. The latch will then be moved into engagement With the hook and the hit will be securely held in place. WVhen it is no longer desired to use the bit the latch will he released and the bit removed and the pliers can then be used as ordinary wire cutters or Pincers. WVhen used as a wire cutter-the latchwill be swung tothe dotted line position shown in Fig. 5 and will be vieldably held in this position by means of the pin 31 which is slidably'mounted in an opening formed in one of the hinged ears 26 and held in binding engagement with the hinged ear 27by1neans of thespring washer 32. It should also be noted that small recesses can be formed in the hinged ear 27 to receive the inner end ofthe pin 31 as side flanges for engagement with the. side:
