ROBINSON I. STRINGFELLOW, 0F SHREVEPOBT, LOUISIANA.
PIPE-WRENCH.
oesaee.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBINSON L. STRING- FELLOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in pipe wrenches, and it consists in the constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved pipe wrench adapted to be readily and quickly attached and released from a pipe, and to effectively grip the latter without danger of crushing.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which si1nilar reference symbols indicate correspond ing parts in the several views :-Figure 1 is a face view of one embodiment of my invention with the jaws shown in the open position; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the jaws in closed position; and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the upper portion of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a hand lever, or handle, terminating in an enlarged end provided with a recess 2. A pair of curved, or arc-shaped, jaws 3 and 4 are pivotally connected at 5, and provided with inner recesses for receiving removable gripping locks 6; said locks being shown secured in position by bolts 7. A pair of links 8 are secured to the opposite sides of the handle 1 and the jaw 3 by pivots 9 and 10. The free end of the jaw L is provided with an outwardly-extending head 11, adapted to enter the end recess 2 and to fulcrum on any point along the front wall 12 of said recess for locking the wrench in engaged or closed position on the pipe.
The jaw 3 has a cut-away end 3 that is curved complementary to, and adapted to engage and form a flush joint with, the curved surface 45 at the end of the jaw 4:. By this construction the two jaws of the Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr, 14 1914,

wrench form a complete circular pipe engaging body, thus entirely surrounding the pipe edges of the locks 6 to bind uniformly against the pipe surface.
When the head 11 is in engagement with the wall 12, it fits in between the pair of links 8 and is thereby held against possible lateral displacement. hen the head 11 is engaged between the links 8 the adjoining surfaces 3 and 1 of the jaws are also partly between said links.
In the operation of my invention, the pivotally-connected jaws 3 and 4: are swung on their link connections 8 to encircle a pipe and the outwardly-extending jaw head 11 inserted in the handle recess 2. The handle is then swung forwardly about the point of engagement of the front recess wall 12 with the jaw head 11, thereby simultaneously exerting a strong pressure on said jaw head 11, and a strong pull through the links 8 of the jaw 3 for firmly clamping the wrench jaws on the pipe. hen it is desired to release and remove the wrench the handle 1 is swung rearwardly,as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2 to relieve the force exerted thereby on the jaws. Upon continued rearward swing of the handle 1, the rear wall 13 of the end recess 2 thereof will engage the curved, or inclined, outer wall it of the jaw head 11 with a strong wedging action for forcing the jaws 4 and 3 apart to positively release said jaws from engagement with the pipe.
I have illustrated preferred and satisfactory constructions, but changes could be made Within the spirit and scope of my invention. v
I claim A pipe wrench comprising a handle provided with an end recess, a pair of pivotallyconnected curved jaws, the free ends of said jaws constructed respectively with a recess having a curved surface and a projecting curved surface adapted to engage and form a flush joint, and said connecting jaws forming a complete circle for completely surrounding the pipe, a pair of links connecting one of said jaws and the handle, a head see Fig. 2) and causing the serrated extending outwardly from the free end of tion by the rear wall of such end recess upon the other of said jaws, said head and the rearward swing of said handle.
adjoining ends of the jaws adapted to fit In testimony whereof, I afiiX my signature, between said links, and said head adapted in presence of two witnesses.
to enter the recess of said handle and to ful- ROBINSON L, STRINGFELLOW. crum on any point along the front wall of such recess, and a curved face on said head adapted to be engaged with a. wedging ac- \Vitnesses R. G. KAI-IN, J12, CHAS. WIGGINS.
