B. REAGAN'.
PIPE WRENCH. No. 389,666. Patented. Sept. 18, 1888.
I WITNESSES INVENTOR:
ATTORNEYS.
BEVERLY REAGAN, OF OUACHITA,
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND O. B.
STEELE, OF BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,666, dated September 18, 1888.
Application filed February 15, 1888. Serial No. 264,070.
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BEVERLY REAGAN, of Ouachita, in the parish of Union and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Tongs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide for the quick accurate adjustment of the jaws of pipe-tongs, so that they will act to properly clamp and hold pipes of varying diameter; and to this end the invention consists, essentially, of a fixed jaw provided with a series of ratchet-teeth, ablock mounted upon the shank of the fixed jaw, a movable jaw carried by the block, a pawl also carried by the block and arranged to be forced into engagement with the ratchet-teeth of the shank of thefixed jaw, and a handle that is pivotally mounted within the block and arranged to operate in connection with the pawl, so as to carry it into and out of engagement with the ratchet-teeth, all as will be hereinafter more fully described,
and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification,in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side view of myimproved form of pipe-tongs. Fig. 2 is sectional view taken on line or a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is sectional view taken on the broken line yy of Fig. 2, and Fig.
4 is a sectional View taken on a line corre-.
' above referred to are made up of a fixed jaw,
10, that is formed with a handle, 11, the outer face of the shank 12, between the jaw proper and the handle, being formed with ratchetteeth 13. Upon the shank 12, I mount ablock, 14, which serves as the pivotal support for a pawl, 15, said pawl being formed with teeth 2, that are adapted to engage with the teeth 13. The pawl 15 is formed with a recess, 3, that is entered by the inner end of a handle 16,which handle is pivotally connected to the block 14, as best shown in Fig. 3.
The handle 16 is formed with bearing-faces 4 and 5, the arrangement being such that when the handle 16 is thrown toward the handle 11 the face 4 will bear against the pawl and force (No model.)
the teeth 2 into engagement with the teeth 13; but when the handle 16 is thrown from the handle 11 theface 5 will act upon the pawl and carry it away from the teeth 13, so that the block 14 may be moved toward or from the jaw 10. To the outer face of the block I connect a swinging or movable jaw, 17,which jaw carries ablock, 18, that is formed with a serrated face, 19, the block 18 being connected to the jaw by apivot-pin, 20, that passes through the jaw, and a shank, 21,which extends downward from the block 18, the shank entering a recess formed in the jaw.
The jaw 17 is operated by the handle 16, which handle when moved toward the handle 11 bears against a projection, 22, which extends inward from an arm,.23, that is made integral with the jaw 17 the arrangement being such that as the handle 16 is moved toward the handle 11 the projection 22 will be borne upon by the handle, and the jaw 17 will be moved toward thejaw 10.
From the construction described it will be seen that the tongs may be 'used in connection with pipes of different diameter, the block 14 being adjusted toward or from the jaw 10, this movement of the block being brought about by throwing the handle 16 outward from the handle 11, thus carrying thepawl 15 from engagement with the teeth 13, after whichit will be understood that the block may be moved in either direction desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In pipe-tongs, the combination, with a fixed jaw formed with a handle and aserrated or toothed shank, of a block through which said shank passes, a pawl carried by the block and arranged to'engage the serrated shank, a handle pivotally connected to the block, and a movable jaw also pivotally connected to the block and provided with a projection located so that it will be borne upon by the pivotally mounted handle, substantially as described.
2. In pipe-tongs, the combination, with a jaw, 10, having a shank, 12, and a handle, 11, the shank being formed with teeth 13, of a block, 14, a pawl, 15, pivotally mounted within the block and provided with teeth adapted to engage the teeth 13, a handle, 16, also pivotally mounted within the block and formed with bearing-faces 4 and 5, which operate in connection with the pawl, ajaw,17, studded 5 or pivotally connected to the outer face of the block 14-, an arm, 23, extending from said jaw, and a projection, 22, carried by the arm, said projection being arranged so that it will be borne upon by the handle 16, substantially as [0 described.
*3. In pipe-tongs, the combination, with a jaw, 10, formed with a handle, 11, and ashank, 12, which shank is provided with teeth 13, of a block mounted upon the shank 12, a pawl,
