Description

I. B. FAIRBANKS.
' PIPE CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 3. 191?.
1,27 1,87 6. Patented July 9, 1918.
earns IVAN l3. FAIRBANKS, 0F EMMETT, KANSAS,
PIPE-CLAIVIP.
Application filed December 3, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ivan B. FAIRBANKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Emmett, in the county of Pottawatomie, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to pipe clamps.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved form of clamp which is a combined pipe jack and holder for use in well digging, its particular advantage arising from the manner in which it effectively grips the pipe, and the manner in which it is readily released.
With the above objects in view, and such others relating to the details of construction, as may hereinafter appear, my invention will now be fully set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clamp,
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view in open position,
Fig. 4 is a side elevation in closed position, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clamping head and operating lever.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a yoke member which is formed of a continuous metal strap bent into the elongated parallel legs 2 which are joined at one end by means of a V-shaped head 3. Secured between the opposing faces of the V-shaped head 3, or else formed as parts thereof, are the oppositely directed series of teeth 4. Pivoted between the legs 2 is a clamping head 5 from which extends the elongated operating handle 6. The clamping head 5 is slightly arcuate in form, having an upper concave face 7 and a lower convex face 8, the faces 7 and 8 terminating at the forward end of the head in a serrated jaw 9. The body of the head 5 is enlarged Specification of Letters Patent.

upon opposite sides into a bearing member 10 which is transversely bored to receive a bolt 11 which may also be passed through either pair of a plurality of bearing openings 12 formed in the legs 2. When the clamping head is pivoted between the legs 2, the jaw 9 extends rearwardly to swing between the le s of the yoke member.
Threaded into the lower side of the head 5, upon the opposite side of the bearing members from the jaw 9, is provided a threaded socket 13 into which is inserted a threaded stop bolt 14, which has a two-fold function. WVhen the device is to be used as a pipe holder, it is placed upon the pipe length by removing the bolt 11. The bolt 11 is removed so that the clampin head may be taken out of the yoke until the latter is placed around the pipe length. Then, the clamping head is returned to its position and secured. Then, the pipe length is let down into the well casing, the holder going therewith until the stop bolt 14 strikes against the well clamping, this action tending to throw the jaw 9 into tighter engagement with the pipe length, so that the latter is securely supported. When it is desired to release the clamp from the pipe length,
- it is merely necessary to place the foot upon the bolt, and press down thereon, this action throwing the jaw 9 away from the pipe, and thereby releasing the clamp therefrom. The device will be used as a pipe jack in an obvious manner.
The device which has been described is a simple and effective jack which will be utilized with equal facility as a holder, and may be relased from the pipe without the use of the hands, so that its efiiciency, over similar devices which have been heretofore known to me is considerably increased. The adjustability of the bolt 14 permits the extension of the latter to suit pipes of greater diameter than may be ordinarily reached for the functioning of the bolt. The device has a further utility as a pipe or Stillson wrench which will be obvious to those skilled in' the art.
What I claim as my invention is A pipe clamp, comprising a yoke member including a pair of legs and a Vshaped head entered into the head, said adjustable stop joining the legs at one end, the opposing member also acting as a release device. faces of the V haped head having a series of In testimony whereof, I affix my signaelamping teeth formed thereon, a clamping ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
