Description
JOHN W. HOUSE AND ALVIN L. KING, OF PERRY, KANSAS.
TONGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15,1912.
Application filed February 19, 1912. Serial No. 678,464. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN IV. Room and ALVIN L. KING, citizens of the United States, residing at Perry, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tongs employed by blacksmiths for holding horse-shoes and other objects, the purpose of the invention being to provide a simple, handy, and convenient tool of the kind which can be readily adjusted to grasp different sized objects; and to this end, the invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specificationFigure 1 is a perspective view of the tool. Fig. 2 is a crosssection on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the tool comprises crossed handles 5 and 6, respectively, each having a jaw 7 at one end. The jaws may be of any desired shape according to the particular work for which the tool is designed. The handles are secured together by abolt 8 which is held in place by a nut 9. The handle 5 has a transverse slot 10 through which the bolt loosely passes.
On that side of the handle 5 which is adjacent to the inner edge of the handle 6 is an integral lug 11 which projects from the handle 5 for a short distance so as to come into the path of the aforesaid edge of the handle 6, and to be engaged thereby when the handles are closed. The lug is adjacent to the crossed and connected port-ion of the handles and serves as a fulcrum for the same.
The tool herein described is handled like any ordinary blacksmiths tongs and forms a simple, handy, and easily operated gripping tool. The lug 11 is the fulcrum of the handles, and the slot 10 readily enables the jaws to be adjusted to different sized objects.
We claim:
1. A tool comprising crossed handles each having a jaw at one end, a bolt connecting the handles, one of said handles having a transverse slot through which the bolt loosely passes, and a fulcrum on one of the handles behind the connection between the handles and engageable by the other handle.
2. A tool comprising crossed handles each having a jaw at one end, a bolt connecting the handle, one of said handles having a transverse slot through which the bolt loosely passes, and a lug on one side of one of the handles, behind the connection between the handles, said lug being in the path of the inner edge of the other handle and engageable by said edge to serve as a fulcrum for the handles.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. HOUSE. ALVIN L. KING.
