To all whom 'it may concern:

Be 1t known that I, OLIVER HAGRUP ERIK- snN, a citizen of the United States, residingl at Orland, in the county of Glenn, State of California, have invented a new and useful Carpenters Clamp; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in carpenters clamps, and has for its object to provide a device 0f this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby the articles to be clamped can be securely gripped, and which can be used in many places where the ordinary form of clamp with its laterally projecting handles could only be used with great inconvenience.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a carpenters clamp which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be easily manipulated7 which is free from lateral protections and can be used in confined places where there would not be room for the ordinary carpenters clamp, and which can be adjusted to tightly grip the articles to which it is applied.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a carpenters clamp constructed in accordance with the invention, the jaws being in an open position and parts being broken away and shown in section to illustrate more clearly the details of construction.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designate a pair of jaw members which have an elongated formation and are arranged in an opposed and parallel relation, said jaw members being movable toward and away from each other for the purpose of causing the gripping ends thereof to forcibly engage any members or articles which itmay be desired to clamp'together. Arranged between the jaw members at one end thereof, and having a parallel relation thereto, is an operating shaft 2 which is provided with right hand threads 2a and left hand threads 2b, the end of the shaft extending beyond the rear ends of the jaws and terminating in a handle 3. A pair of collars 4 are mounted upon the right hand threads 2a of the operating shaft, opposite sides of the collars being pivotally connected at 5 to toggle levers 6 which hav@ the outer ends thereof received within recessed portions 7 of the aw members l and pivotally connected to the said jaw members by means of suitable pins 8. A third collar 9 is mounted upon the left hand threads 2b of the operating shaft 2 and pivotally connected at 10 to links 1l which are inclined reversely with respect to the toggle levers 6 and pivotally connected at their outer ends to one of the pins 8. `With this construction it will be obvious that by rotating the operating shaft 2 the two collars 4 will be moved longitudinally thereon in onedirection and the collar 9 moved upon the shaft in the opposite direction, thereby causing the toggle levers to either force the jaw members l apart or draw them toward each other. The recessed portions 7 of the jaw members are arranged to house the toggle levers 6 and operating shaft 2 when the jaw members are drawn completely together, as indicated by Fig. 2.

The jaw members may be constructed either of wood or metal, although it would probably be preferable to form them of are itted' within notches 13 in the ends 0f the jaws 1 and provided upon their lower.

The dove-tail grooves 15 extend parallel to the jaws, while the grooves 16 are arranged transversely with respect thereto and intersect the grooves 15 at right angles. l/Vith this construction it 'will be obvious that the gripping blocks 12 can either be arranged parallel to the jaw members 1, as indicated by Fig. 4, or transversely with respect thereto, as indicated by 4Fig. 5, thereby enabling the device to'be adjusted in such a manner as to grip the articles to be clamped in the most eective manner. Owing to the absence of laterally projecting handles and screws it will be understood that the device can be used in conned spaces where the ordinary carpenters clamp could only be used with inconvenience and diiiiculty.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. A clamp of the character described, including a pair of opposed and substantially parallel elongated jaw members, an adjusting rod arranged between and parallel to the jaw members and having right and left hand threaded portions, a pair of collars env cluding a pair of opposed and substantially .parallel elongated jaw members, said jaw members having the inner faces thereot recessed at 011e end, an adjusting rod arranged between the recessed ends of the jaw inembers and provided with right and left hand threaded portions, a pair ot' collars engaging one threaded portion or the rod, toggle "levers pivotally connecting the collars to the "jaw members, `a third collar engaging the f other threaded portion of the rod, links inclined reversely with respect to the toggle levers and pivotally connecting the third .collar to the jaw members, so that by rotating the adjusting rod in opposite directions the jaw members can be Vmoved toward and away from each other, the adjusting rod and toggle levers being received within the recessed portions of the jaws when the jaws are brought together.
