Description

(No Model.)
W. W. CHARLTON.
MONKEY WRENGEL.
Patented Nov. 4, 1890.
v l I n Jtra fi /1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM W. CHARLTON, OF WVOOSTER, OHIO.
MONKEY-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,743, dated November 4, 1890. Application filed April 17, 1890. $crial No. 34:8,319. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM W. CHARLTON, of Wooster, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Monkey-Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in monkey-wrenches; and it consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
I11 the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is.
a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an edge view.
A represents a flat wrench-bar, having at the one end thereof divergent prongs A, arranged approximately, as shown, and having at the other end a handle A the edges of bar A between the handle and prongs being screw-threaded, as shown at a.
B is a sleeve adapted to slide on bar A, this sleeve having side openings to accommodate thumb-nut O, the latter being screw-threaded internally to engage the screw-threads of bar A.
D D are the jaws of the wrench, these jaws being mounted with an easy fit on prongs A, the jaws being connected by links d d with sleeve B. The one jaw D is preferably provided with teeth, as shown at d, so that the wrench may be used for turning pipes or rods. By turning thumb-nut O in the one direction or the other the jaws D D are moved toward or from each other, so as to engage nuts, rods, or pipes of different sizes, the different positions of these jaws being respectively shown in solid and dotted lines, Fig. 1.
The device is simple and comparativelyinexpensive, and will be found convenient in many places where the ordinary monkeywrench having lateral jaws cannot be operated.
What I claim is In a monkey-wrench, the combination, with a flat wrench -bar having screwthreaded edges and having divergent prongs, of a sleeve and nut, substantially as indicated, slidingly mounted on the wrench-bar, and jaws mounted on the diverging prongs of the wrench-bar, such jaws and sleeve being connected by links, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 1st day of April, 1890.
WILLIAM WV. CHARLTON. Witnesses:
