PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,719, dated June 23, 1896.
Application filed April 23, 1396. Serial No. 588,800. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALsoN W. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fullerton, in the county of Nance and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an eiiect-ive pipe-wrench,which is also simple and cheap in construction; and it consists in providing the handle with a pivoted lever and with plates rigidly secured thereto forming the stationary jaws, together with an adj ustable jaw pivoted between the plates, a fiat spring for holding the pivot-pin in place, and threaded rods connected to the movable jaw and to the lever and having an interposed turnbuckle, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pipe-wrench constructed in accordance withmy invention. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation, and Fig. 3 is a detail view, of the pivot-pin upon which the movable jaw is mounted.
A designates the handle of the implement,to the upper end of which, on each side, are rigidlysecured plates B and B, forming the rigid or stationary jaws of the wrench, the ends of which are inclined and provided with teeth I). To one side of the handle Ais pivoted a lever O, which is bent in the segment of a circle and further bent so that the end or grasping portion may abut against the edge of thehandle A.
D designates the movable jaw, which is pivoted between the upper part of the plates or stationary jaws B and B by a pin E, which passes through transverse apertures in the movable and stationary jaws, said pin having an end-grasping portion c and a notch e near its opposite end. hen the pin is in place, the notch 6 will be located just beyond one of the stationary jaws, and with said notch engages a flat spring E, which is secured to said stationary j aw by a screw f and is adapted to hold the pivot-pin in place. The movable jaw D is providedwith a series of apertures d, through which the pivot-pin is passed, so that said movable jaw will be adjustable with respect to the stationary jaws, and in making the adjustment it is only necessary to turn the pivot-pin to move the notch 6' thereof out of engagement with the spring F, when said pivot-pin can be readily removed without havin g to manually manipulate the said spring.
To the outer end of the movable jaw is attached a rod g, which is in swinging engagement therewith, and to the lever C is connected a second rod g. The ends of these rods are threaded in opposite directions, and with said threaded ends engage a turnbuckle G, which provides for a second adjustment of the movable jaw D.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the drawings, the operation of the implement will be readily understood by those 7 5 skilled in the art, and it will be noted that a very simple, cheap, and effective pipe-wrench is provided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination in a pipe-wrench, of the handle A, plates or stationary jaws B and B rigidly secured to the upper end thereof, a movable jaw pivoted between said plates, together with a lever C pivoted to the handle, rods 9 and 9 connected to the movable jaw and to the lever, the ends of said rods being threaded in opposite directions, and a turnbuckle G in engagement with the threaded o ends of the rods, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a pipe-wrench, the combination with the handle A having plates or stationary jaws B and B" rigidly secured thereto and provided with a transverse aperture, of a movable jaw D having a series of transverse apertures d, a pivot-pin E adapted to pass through the apertures in the jaws and provided with a notch e, and a fiat spring F secured to one of the jaws I00 and adapted to engage said notch; together In testimony whereof I aflix my signature with a lever C pivoted to the handle, oppoin presence of two Witnesses. sitely-threaded rods g and g connected to said lever and to the movable jaw, and a turn ALSON XV.
