PIPE-WRENCH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,502, dated. September 24, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, JOHN D.I*IODGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kearney, in the county of Hudson and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Tongs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The special object of the invention is to make a pipe-wrench which will readily grasp many sizes of pipe firmly and always without injury thereto.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan View of my improved pipe-wrench; Fig. 2, a detail perspective view of the sliding jaw, and Fig. 3 a detail view of the hook-bar and lever.

In. the drawings, A represents one of the handles, which has the hook a turned upon such an inside curve as will receive convenien tly pipes of different sizes.

B is the lever-handle, fulcrumed at Z) on the side of handle A, and having at an obtuse angle thereto the two parallel arms 1) 19 between which turns a hand-nut C on a screw D. This screw passes through both arms Z) If longitudinally of the pipe-wrench, but not parallel to the handle B, said screw being arranged in a line at an acute angle to the handle B. The end of screw is hollowed out to receive the round end of a link E, which is pivoted thereto, while its other end is simi' larly pivoted in a groove of the sliding jaw F. This jaw is attached to a U-shaped strap F, so as to slide easily on the piece A to and from the hook a, is toothed in front, and is preferably curved concavely in front.

WVhat I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is

In pipe-tongs, the combination, with the hook-handle A and lever-handle B, of the parallel arms I) b at an obtuse an gle to handle B, the screw D, passing down through said arms obliquely, the nut 0, arranged on the screw between said arms, and the sliding jaw F, connected by a pivoted link E with the screw D and retained on the shank by shaft F, substantially as shown and described.
