WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1914.
Application led September 16, 1913. Serial No. 790,126.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. McLen- LAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Kanawha, State of Test Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVrenches; and I do hereby declare the f ollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in wrenches, and has for its object to provide a wrench constructed in such a manner that it may be quickly adjusted for manipulating nuts or pipes of various sizes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench which is exceedingly s1mple in construction, durable, and eiiicient in operation.
Vith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thro-ugh the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. f1 is a sectional view on line lr-4c of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates a handle having formed upon one end a fixed jaw 2, one edge of which is provided with gripping teeth 3. Formed integral with the handle 1 and adjacent the fixed jaw 2 are spaced ears 4, between which is pivotally connected one end of the jaw 5, said jaw having one of its edges provided with a. nut engaging socket 6 adapted to coact with the teeth 3 to clamp a nut, it being of course understood that the wrench is operable for manipulating pipes in the usual manner. The pivoted end of the jaw 5 is provided with a series of teeth 7, the purpose of which willappear later.
The handle 1 is provided with a recess 8 in which is pivoted the inner end of the lever 9, the outer end of which is formed with spaced wings 10 having their forward edges provided with teeth 11 which engage the teeth 7 of the pivoted jaw, said wings embracing the handle when the lever is forced toward the same.
A socket 1*?, is formed in the handle and has engaged therein one end of the coil spring 18, the other end of which is fixed to the lever 9, said spring serving to normally hold the lever away from the handle.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a wrench has been provided which can he quickly adjusted for various sizes of work upon simply exerting pressure upon the lever 9, whereupon the jaw 5 will be swung to the desired adjusted position. Further it will be noted that upon pressing on the lever the jaw 5 may bequickly disengaged from the work.
IVhat is claimed is A' wrench comprising a handle, a fixed jaw formed upon one end thereof, a second jaw pivotally connected to the handle and having teeth formed upon its pivoted end, a lever having one end pivotally connected to the handle and its other end provided with spaced wings, said wings having teeth `formed upon their forward ends for engaging the first named teeth, a spring interposed between the handle and lever for normally holding the same spaced from the handle, Vas and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL T. MCLELLAN.
