UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
CHARLES E. MERRITT, OF GOUVERNEUR, NEW YORK.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 511,155, dated December 19, 1 895.
. Application filedhngust a1, 1893. $61iitlN0i 484, 0. (NOmodaL) To a-ZZ whom it may concern: It will be noted tiatnthe tnovable jaw can be Be it known that I, CHARLES E. Mnnnir'r, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at- Gouverneur, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe wrenches.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective pipe or bolt wrench the parts of which are so constructed that they will grasp the object placed between the jaws and tighten thereon as the handle is turned, the construction of the wrench being such that adjustment is unnecessary and there will be but little strain upon the pivot bolt which connects the parts to each other.
The invention consists in a pipe wrench comprising a handle having formed thereon a Serrated jaw and beyond said jaw a projection through which passes a pivot pin, a bail which is pivoted on said pin and a movable jaw which is retained in engagement with the projecting end of the handle by the pivoted bail, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view'of a pipe wrench constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side view showing the bail partly in section.
A designates the handle, which is provided with a lug or projecting end a apertured for the passage of a pivot pin 12. The part of the handle which engages with the object to be turned is shaped as shown and is provide with teeth 0/. I
B designates the movable jaw which is recessed to correspond with the shape of the lug on the handle and is also provided on its grasping surfaces with serrations or teeth I).
turned so that the straight portion thereof will be parallel with the handle or turned at right angles therewith, as shown in dotted lines Fig. 2.
C designates a bail or loop the side pieces of which are pierced to receive the pin which connects the same to the stationary jaw or upper part of the handle, and this bail retains the pivoted jaw in connection with the lug or projecting end of the handle.
In operation the pipe or other object is placed between the jaws and the handle Ais turned in the direction indicated by the arrow until the serrated surfaces of the jaws contact with the object grasped. The ing on the handle will then exert a pressure on the recessed part of the movable jaw and bring the jaws together upon the pipe or other object to securely hold the same. It will be noted that but little or no strain comes upon the pivot pin but nearly all comes upon the lug at the upper end of the handle. The bandle when turned in the opposite direction will cause the movable jaw to let go readily.
A pipe wrench constructed as hereinbefore described will securely hold pipes of difierent sizes without having to adjust the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a pipe wrench, the combination, of a handle having a lug, a movable jaw recessed for engagement with said lug, and a bail for holding the parts in sliding engagement with each other said bail being pivoted to the lug which is formed integral with the handle, substantially as shown, and for the purpose Set forth.
2. A pipe wrench comprisingahandle having a rounded lug a apertured for the passage of a pivot pin, said handle having a serrated faced, a movable jaw B having a projecting .portion with serrations and a part at an angle therewith which is recessed for the reception of the lug on the handle, and a bail O pivoted to the handle for holding the movable jaw in engagement therewith, substantially as shown.
3. A pipe wrench comprising a handle, grasping jaw and lug integral with each other, of a movable jaw having a recess the base of by means of a bail on loop which is pivoted to the handle by a pin which passes through an aperture in the lug, substantially as shown.
7 In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
CHARLES B. MERRITT.
