Description

ADOLPHUS DESORMEAU, OF VIANlSTQUE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNO'R 0F ONE-HALF T0 DANIEL E. SELLER, OF MANSTIQUE, MICHGAIT.
WRENCH.
Specification of Lietters Patent.
ratentea nar. ai, raie.
Application ile June 28, 1915. Serial No. 38,798.
To ZZ 107mm t may concern Be it known that I, ADoLPHUs Dnson- Arnau, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manistique, in the. county of. Schoolcraft and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful improvements in lVrenches, of which the following is a speciiicat1on.
My present invention pertains to 'slidingjaw wrenches of the handle-lever grip type; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous quick acting wrench hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
in the accompanying drawings whiclrare hereby made a part hereof: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my novel wrench'. Fig. 2 is a cross-section, taken in the plane indicated bv the line 22 of Fig. 1.
u Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings. l
ntegra-l with the fixed jaw l of the wrencli is a shank i2 which is provided at an intermediate point of its length with a vlaterally-disposed portion 3. The said portion 8 is provided in its forward side with a longitudinally-disposed socket 1, and from the portion extends one handle 5 of the wrench. Slidable on the shank 2 is a jaw 6, opposed to the aw 1, and formed in the rear side of said jaw 6 is a longitudinally-disposed threaded bore 8.
Guided rectilinearly in the socket t of the shank portion 3 is a screw 9 which extends into and engages vthe threaded bore 8 of the jaw 6. rlhe said screw 9 is prov1ded at 10 with an integral finger portion, and on the plain portion of the screw 1s loosely arranged a sleeve 12 which is interposed b etween the finger portion 10 and a Cotter pin 13 or other suitable abutment carried by the screw. The said sleeve 12 is opposite lateral projections 14.
Fulcrumed at 15 on the shank 2 is the handle 16 complementary to the handle 5. The said handle 16 is provided at its forward end with a transversely-disposed bifurcated portion 17. This latter straddles the shank 2 and the sleeve 12 and is provided in its arms with apertures 18 which receive the projections 14; of the sleeve. Manifestly when the screw is turned about its axis the slidable jaw will be moved toward or from the xed liaw according to the direction of rotation. ln this way the wrench may -be approximately accommoprovided with dated to the size of the article tobe turned. Then when the aws are properly positioned relative to the article, and the handles are gripped to draw the handle 16 toward the handle 5, the jaws will Ihe strongly held against the article. Again when the handles are relieved of pressure, the jaws will be immediately released from the article and may then be disengaged, therefrom.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that my novel wrenchis simple and compactin construction, susceptible of being quickly and easily adjusted to the approximate size of the article to be turned, and adapted to be expeditiously and rmly fixed on and as readily released from the article.
I have entered into a detailed description of the best practical embodiment of my invention of which l am cognizant in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of said embodiment. I do not, however, desire to be understood as conning myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts since in the future practice of the invention such modifications may be made as fairly fall within the scope of my appended claims.
l/Vhen desirable the handle may be made slightly longer than the handle 16 and shaped to form a screw driver. rlhis, however, is not of the essence of my invention, and it may therefore be omitted when deemed expedient. It will also he noticed that the handle 16 is preferably provided at 2a in the arms of its bifurcation with a wirereceiving notch, said notch being designed to cooperate with the opposed edge of the shank 2 'to form an eiiicient wire-cutter. Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
l. A wrench of the sliding-jaw, handlelever grip type, comprising a fixed jaw, a shank integral with said jaw and having a laterally-disposed portion which terminates L in a handle and also having a longitudinallydisposed socket in said portion, a jaw slidable on the shank, between the iixed jaw and said laterally-disposed portion, and having a longitudinally-disposed threaded bore in its rear end, a longitudinally-disposed screw extending into and engaging said bore and also having an intermediate finger portion and a plain portion, the latter movable in ithe socket of the shank portion, a sleeve CTX loosely mounted on the plain portionof the screw and interposed between the finger portion and an abutment carried by the screw `and having opposite projections, aiid a handle having a bifurcated, transversely-disposed portion, pivoted to and straddling the shank and also straddling the sleeve and vhaving apertures in its arms receiving the projections of the sleeve.
2. A wrench comprising a shank having a jaw at one end and a laterallydisposed portion at its opposite end terminating in a handle, a' jaw slidable on the shank, a longitudinally-disposed screw threaded into the slidable jaw and socketed and guided in said laterally-disposed portion of the shank and having a finger portion, a sleeve loosely mounted on and movable endwise with the screw, and a handle pivoted to or ulcrumed Copies of this patent may be obtained for on the shank and having an arm connected ywith said sleeve.
handle pivoted to or ulcrumed on the shank and having an arm, and means connecting said arm with the screw and constructed and arranged to permit of free rotation of the In testimony whereof Ihave hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. y
