PATENT OFFICE.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,276, dated January 3, 1905.
Application filed June 29, 190 1. Serial No. 214,663.
To all whom/ it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IsAAo D. GREEN, a resident of McMinnville, in the county of VVarren and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
My invention relates to an improved pipewrench, the object of the invention being to provide a wrench of simple and inexpensive construction, strong and durable in use, and capable of grasping and holding any ordinary diameter of pipe with but slight adjustments of the wrench members.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2is a view in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is an edge view, and Fig. 4: is a view in cross-section.
My improved wrench comprisestwo parallel bars 1 and 2, located side by side, and bar 1 has an angular sleeve 3, secured thereto or made integral therewith, inclosing a portion of bar 2, serving as a guide for longitudinal movement of bar 2 and forming the handle of the tool. Bar 1 is enlarged at its free end, forming one jaw 4 of the wrench. This jaw 1 is preferably grooved to receive a web 5, carrying a toothed plate 6 of hardened steel, and the web is secured in the groove by a cross-pin or rivet. The other bar, 2, has an outwardly flared bifurcated end in which wrench-jaw 7 is pivotally secured by a pin 8. This jaw 7 is in the shape of an acute angle, with teeth on its contacting-face, and owing to its shape and the fact of its pivotal point being out of alinement with the main toolhandle the jaws will without adjustment of the parts grasp and hold pipes of greatly-different diameter.
To lock the bars 1 and 2 together, the bar 1 is provided at its edge against bar 2 with a semicircular notch 8, and the bar 2 is made with a series of said semicircular notches 9, any one of which may be moved opposite notch 8 to form a circular opening to receive a locking-pin 10 to hold them in such position. This pin 10 is mounted in a metal plate or band 11, which is secured to bar 1 and surrounds bar 2, holding the bars tightly together, and the pin 10 is provided on one end with an enlarged head 12. A plate or holder 13 is pivoted at one end to band 11 and is recessed to receive and inclose the head of pin 10 when swung to a position over the same, and thereby prevent movement of the pin and holding the parts securely at any adjustment. To adjust the parts, holder 13 is swung to one side, pin 10 removed, the bars adjusted, the pin inserted, and holder 13 swung back over the same.
With my improvements by constructing the parts as shown and described but few adjustments are necessary to enable the Wrench to grasp all ordinary sizes of pipe.
A great many slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pipe-wrench comprising two bars disposed side by side, one of said bars having a jaw at its forward end and the other bar having a laterally-projecting. portion at its forward end, an angular jaw pivotally attached to said lateral portion of one of the bars, sleeves secured to one of said bars and embracing the other bar, and a fastening device to pass through said sleeve and engage said bars to lock them together.
2. A pipe-wrench comprising two bars disposed side by side, one of said bars provided at its forward end with a jaw and the other bar provided at its forward end with a laterally projecting portion, said bars having grooves in their meeting faces, a sleeve secured to one of said bars and embracing the In testimony whereof I have signed this other bar, a pin to pass through said sleeve specification in the presence of two subscriband enter alined grooves in the meeting faces ing witnesses.
of the bars, pivoted holder to cover the head ISAAC D. GREEN. of the locking-pin, and an angular jaw piv- Witnesses:
