@pecification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1905,
Application filed May 11,1905. Serial No. 259,917.
To all whom, 11/; may concern:
Be it known that 1, Roman A. BnooKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashtahula, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention is a wrench particularly adapted for use as a pipe-wrench.
It comprises athreaded handle having arms pivoted to the front end thereof and adjusted and held by means of a chain connected to a traveling nut on the handle. At the end of each arm is a jaw, and the jaws are adjustable to vary their angularity with respect to the arms, and consequently with respect to the piece being acted on.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the wrench. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 8 is a detail of one 0.1 the jaws removed. Fig. a is a section on the line t a of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a flattened handle-bar threaded, as at 7, for a portion of its length. Pivoted to the front end of this llandle-bar are two arms 8 and 9, each of which is formed of parallel spaced plates which embrace the end of the bar, where they are connected by a pivot bolt The arm 8 has connected thereto on the inner side one end of a chain 11, which extends thence tl'irough the arm 9, between the plates thereof, and around a roller 12, which is journaled in the plates of said arm. The other end of the chain is connected by a bolt 13 to a ring 14:, which is fitted in a groove in a nut 15 behind a collar 16 thereon. The nut travels on the threads 7. At the front end each arm has a jaw member 17, pivoted by a bolt 18 between the side plates of the arm, and the rear end of the jaw member-has a notched segment 19.
20 is a squared key-piece of metal extending through a mortise in the arm and having ribs 21 arranged to engage in the notches 19. The piece 20 is removably held in position by a spring 22, fastened to the side of the arm, having a lug Q3 engaging in a depression in the side of said piece.
the piece can be pulled out, allowing the jaw member to turn on the pivot 18 to vary its By lifting the Spring.
angularity with respect to the work. The ribs 21, engaging the notches 19, prevent turn or slipping ot the jaws when in use.
The arms-are drawn together and the jaws adjusted to the work by means of the nut 15 and the chain .1 l. When the jaws are placed upon the piece of work, the nut 15 is backed until the chain is pulled tight, thereby clamping the jaws upon the work. The power can then be applied and the wrench operated. Release ot' the work is effected by advancing the nut to loosen the chain.
To prevent the arm 8, to which the chain is attached, from swinging entirely around by reason of the pull of the chain, a block 8 is fixed between the side plates forming the arm, and this block has an inclined face, which stops against the inclined taco 6 at the end 01 the handle 6, so that the arm cannot swing beyond a certain position.
The means for adjusting the jaws at diil'er ent angles with respect to the arms-allows the same to be advantageously set for round, square, or other work, and a wrench having a wide range of utility is produced.
\Vhat 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A. wrench comprising a handle, arms pivoted thereto, means to draw the arms together, and jaws pivoted to the arms and adjustable angularly with respect thereto, and means to hold the jaws at adjustment.
2. A wrench comprising a handle, arms pivoted thereto, means to draw the arms together, jaws pivoted to arms and having notches at the rear ends, and keys between the jaws and arms, having ribs fitting in said notches.
b. A wrench comprising a screw-threaded handle having a traveling nut thereon, a pair of arms having jaws at the ends, pivoted to said handle, and a chain coni'iected at one end to one arm and extei'uling around a roller on the other arm and connected to the nut at the other end.
I n testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
