A. JANSA. 4
WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED MAYIG. 1919.

F lG.2
FIG. 1
nvewtoz J "Ja/ms'a/ ANTON JANSA, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIG-NOR OF ONE-HALF TO VICTOR PETERGA, OF
CLEVELAND, OHIO.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 16, 1919.
Application filed May 16, 1919. Serial No. 297,568.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON J ANSA, a citizen of J ugo-Slavia, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
-The primary object of the present inven-. tion is to provide a wrench having a movable outer aw and a pivotally mounted inner jaw carrying frame so constructed that when the wrench is in adjusted position for operation and is moved to a binding position upon an object, the inner jaw thereof will be caused to move with a wedging action relative to the adjusted outer jaw to insure positive binding action upon said object.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench providing an adjustable outer jaw with a plvotally mounted inner jaw frame wherein the inner jaw is movably mounted relative to said frame and handle to permit a further binding action upon an object when the wrench is placed in operation.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts here inafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and in which like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing in dotted lines the pin and slot connection between the inner jaw and the carrying frame therefor,
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the wrench with a portion thereof shown in section to illustrate the pivotal mount of the inner jaw carrying frame,
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the wrench further showing the pivotal connection between the inner jaw carrying frame and the handle,
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the link connecting the inner jaw to the handle and.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the inner jaw detached from its carrying frame.
Describing the invention more in detail, there is shown a hollow handle portion 6 of substantially barrel formation as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 while the outer end thereof is cut away to provide side plates 7,
the outer forward edges of which are provided with projecting ears 8. V
An inner jaw carrying frame 9 including a hollow shank portion 10 is pivotally mounted between-the side plates 7 of the handle upon the screws or similar members 11 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Spaced projecting lugs; 12 are carried by the inner jaw frame 9 and revolubly mounted between said lugs 12 is a wormnut 13 having threads interrupted on one side thereof.
The inner jaw 14 having a serrated engaging face 15 is provided with a depending lug 16 with a transverse slot 17 therein, a pin 18 extending between the outer lugs 12 of the frame 9 and loosely passing through the slot 17 in the jaw 14, whereby said inner jaw is loosely mounted on the carrying frame 9. A link 19 is forked at its upper end as at 20 and is adapted to straddle the outwardly projecting end of the jaw 14 while a pivotal bolt 21 passes through openings 22 in the side lugs 20 and also through an opening 23 in the jaw 14. A pin 24 pivotally connects the ears 8 upon the handle 6 to the lower end of the link 19 by passing through an opening 25 provided therein.
An outer jaw 26 has an inwardly positioned serrated operative face 27 and is carried by a shank 28, the side edge thereof adjacent the jaw faces 15 and 27 being similarly serrated as at 29 while the remaining portion thereof is provided with worm engaging teeth 30. A tension spring 31 extends between the inner end of the shank 28 and the handle 6 so that there is a constant tendency for the jaw 26 to move inwardly. toward the jaw 14 and this arrangement also prevents the outer jaw and shank from becoming accidentally displaced from the wrench handle.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is thought that the construction and operation thereof will be readily apparent, it being noted that the worm nut 13 is moved to present its interrupted thread surface to the adjacent tooth portion of the shank 28 when it is desired to primarily adjust the jaw faces upon an object and by a subsequent rotation of said worm screw the jaws are firmly held in their adjusted positions. In the use of the wrench, the aws 14 and 26 being placed upon an object, and the handle 6 gripped and moved in the desired direction, there will be a tendency for both the inner and outer to move With the carrying frame -9 upon the pivotal connection 11 with the handle 6 and in so doing, the link 19 connecting the inner jaw 14 and handle will cause the innor jaw to move in a wedging and binding action relative to the outer jaw 26 further to grip the object positioned ther-ebetween, this movement of the inner jaw being facilitated by the pin and slot connection between the jaw 1i and the carrying frame 9.
What I claim as new is A wrench comprising a handle portion, an inner jaw frame pivoted therein for limited movement, an inner jaw having a pin and slot connection with said jaw frame, a link extending between the outer end of the inner jaw and the handle portion, an outer jaw having a toothed shank slidably received in the inner jaw frame, a spring connecting the inner end of said shank to the inner end of said handle, and a worm journaled in the jaw frame in engagement with the toothed shank of the outer jaw, the pin and slot connection between the inner aw and the supporting frame permitting a slight relativ lateral movement of the jaws when the wrench is in operation.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
