Description

A. BURKMAN PIPE: wRENdH May 19,-1925.
Filed Oct, 11,4 1923 mwmw.
Patented May 19, 1925.
UNITED s'rngfns ARTI'IUR BURKMAN, OF KENOSHA, WISCONSIN.
PIPE WRENCH.
Application filed October 11, 1923.
To all 'whom it may co'nc'm:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR BURKMAN, a citizen of the United States, i'esiding at Kenosha., in the county of Kenosha and State of lVisconsin, have invented a new and useful Pipe lVrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to tools and more particularly to wrenohes or the like, the primary object of the invention being to provide a construction to facilitate the use of the wrench in corners or restricted areas wherein it would be impossible to operate the usual wrench now in use.
Another important object of the invention is to provide means for looking the adjustable jaw in its postions of adjustrnent, to facilitate the use of the wrench.
VVith the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as thedescription proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter clesoribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing` from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a wrench oonstructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is al sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of another form.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference Character 5 designates the handle portion of the wrench which is constructed of any suitable material, one end of the handle portion extending at an angle at 6 to provide a head. The head 6 is formed with a bore to accommodate the shank 7 of r the adjustable jaw 8, the shank 7 being threaded as at 9 to cooperate with the threads of the adjusting nut 10 which is fitted in the opening 11 formed in the head The stationary jaw is indicated at 12 and cooperates with the movable jaw 8 to grip an article therebetween, the jaws being provided with the usual teeth 13 to bite into the article under operation.
Serial No. 667,915.
In order that the adj usting nut 11 will be hold in positions of adjustment, a securing screw 14.` is provided, which operates through a suitable threaded opening in the head, the inner end of the screw contacting with the adjusting screw 11 as clearly shown by Fig. 1 of the dra\\'*i11g to set up a binding action therebetween and prevent movement of the adj Listing screw 11.
In the form of the invention as illustrated by Fig. 3 of the drawings,.the handle of the wrench is indicated at 15 and is provided with an enlargement 16 formed at one end thereof, which enlargement has a cutout portion formed in one of its faces to provide a cavity 17 to house the ring 18 and outer extremity of the looking screw 19 that has its inner end disposed adjacent to the adjusting nut 20, to contact therewith and restrict movement thereof.
The outer end of the enlargement 16 is formed with teeth 21 that cooperate with the teeth 22 of the movable jaw 23, which movable jaw is provided with a threaded shank 24 Operating through a suitable opening formed in the enlargement 16.
Secured to the enlargement 16 at the rear thereof, by means of the screw 26, is a spring member 25 which has its forward end contaoting with the rear surface of the shank of the movable jaw 23 as clearly shown by Fig. 3 of the drawing, so that the jaw 23 will be held normally to the limit of its forward movement eliminating any possibility of the jaw becoming accidentally disconnected from the nut or article under operation while in use.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that when the wrench has been properly adjust-` ed, the looking screw 19 will be operated to engag'e the nut 20 and hold the same against movement.
I claimz- A wrench including a handle portion having a jaw formed at one end thereof and having a cutout portion formed therein adjacent to the jaw, said handle portion having a bore extending from a point adjacent to the jaw and terminating in spaced relation with the jaw, a movable jaw having a shank of less diameter than the bore to permit the movable jaw to rock within the bore,
a nut on the shank, said nut being positioned in the eutout porton, saidl nut being of a width less than the width of the cutout portion to permt the nut to move With the shank, and a looking screw extending through the handle porton and engagng the nut to force the nut into engagement with one Wall-of the cutout portion.
In testimony that I clam the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afixed my signature in the presence of two wtnesses.
ARTHR BURKMAN.
